removing door skins

I'm planning on installing the door stop reinforcements next weekend, so I will be removing the interior door skins. The car is an '83 911 cab. I have a couple of quick questions:

1. Any advice / hints / tricks for this project - I've read the tech article already listed (lots of help), but if anybody has any other "goodies" I'd love to hear about them.

2. Is there anything else I should do while I have access to the interior of the doors?

Thanks

Adam

Adam,

My advice would be above all else, make sure you repair/close up the vapor barrier once you cut into itto get to the inner part of the door. Years ago I made the mistake of misunderstanding the importance of it and the resulting water on the door panel caused it to severely warp. I am in the process of remanufacturing door panels right now as a matter of fact!
It might not be a bad idea to lube up all of the window mechanicals to keep them in good shape. One thing I am doing now as well is putting "TAC mat" a sound proofing pad on the inside of my doors while the panels are off. Yeah, it is adding a bit of weight, but I am impressed with the solid sound the doors now have when they close. There is now a solid thunk vice the old set of rattling.
One last bit to check would be the water vents in the bottom of the door. Might as well make sure they are not plugged up. I guess that is all I can think of now. Good luck!

For the door pulls where they mount just above the door pockets I have a set of cap screw sockets. I pullled the tip out of the one that fits the bolts and use a 1/4 in drive socket that fits the tip and use an 1/4 in extension...just fits inside hole. Makes removal of those bolts a lot easier. Also check the plastic "catch" that holds your inside door release rod to the door release. Be very careful popping the rod out and back into the "catch" .....Although available can wreck your day if they break. Make sure you have all the "wind noise" plugs in place. Just a few things I learned along the way. If my description of the parts are unclear ...as you start to take the door apart you'll know which ones I'm talking about.

Get Ball-end in-hex wrenches to remove the cap screw inside the door pull/handle

some ~$15 to ~$20.00 well spent. the ones I have have a shank ~ 6". you can just stuff the correct wrench into the handle area and wobble it until it engages. much easier than fiddling with a straight, single piece allen (in-hex) wrench.
