O.K. who`s going to help me

I just bought this engineless 76` 912e for a mere $1200.00
I would like to put it back to the original 2.0 4 cyl motor but need some advise before I start my search. For starters the car came with allmost everything but the longblock and exhaust. I have all the injection , the complete transaxle which im told is unique to this car ,distributor, all the mounts including the rear bar. Also all the tin and the fan /alternator housing with the alternator. The car reads 80k on the odometer and has no rust anywhere. The paint is new but not a expensive job. The engine compartment is still the original green which is kinda cool but a little to flashly for me. I plan to sell the car when its together to pay for my new drivway which you can see in the pictures that i need. Please help me figure out what the best move is to make. I found this motor on ebay also http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1807242970&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=1014919867&indexURL=0&rd=1 I would also consider a alternative powerplant. Any suggestions ? BTW I own a auto repair shop so labor is not a problem

I know it's not sitting in front of me, but that roller looks pretty good for $1200!

Yes its very nice. The orginal owner just past away 3 weeks ago and the wife dont know where the motor is. He probably sent it out to be rebuilt but we dont know where. The car is in really clean strait shape. I definetely scored on this one. But my wife is very unhappy since I now have 3 p-cars and still got a dirt driveway. I guess its a sickness , but I dont want the cure.

Kurt:

I e-mailed the guy 2 days ago for serial number, etc. Haven't heard back, maybe you'll have better luck.

You probably know this, Jack Olson, Dick Verberg, and Thom have 3.6 conversions. The long and the short of it is that you have a 2300lb car with about 250 hp. Very nice power to weight ratio.

My 1 Cent.

This would also be pretty interesting for a swap. But it looks like alot of work. How would you mate the tranny to this.

the exhaust system is the hardest stuff to find. 912E only. i would just find a good deal at a yard on a complete unit, then you're done. or buy a complete core for the needed parts and score a 914 2.0 engine. same long block.

hey,
that '76 came with a 2.0 liter?! am i under the mistaken idea that the 2.7 liter was the only original engine or do you mean someone had swapped it for a 2.0?

anyway, if i had a '76 i think it would be cool to have the original 2.7 liter engine upgraded to carrera rs specs, i.e. different cams and pistons, etc. the typical 911 engine at that time came with either 8:1 or 8.5:1 (s model) compression. the rs engine has a compression ratio of 10.5:1 and produced close to 210 horsepower yielding a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds. yummy! just not sure that its always easy to find the high octane needed to feed it. that's what i'd like to have, though...a sleeper, rs clone.

BigChill, it's a 912, not a 911.

A 912 is not the best platform for an ambitious engine swap. The 3.4 liter 1999 engine, especially, would be a nightmare. The amount you paid for the car wouldn't hardly make a dent in the cost of what you'd have to put together to plumb a water-cooling system. The brakes, transmission and suspension are all pretty much throwaway items if you put a serious six in there. I think if that's your goal, you'd be wiser to sell the shell and get a pre-78 911 tub.

But for that car, I'd stick with the appropriate powerplant and cross your fingers that too many of the hard-to-source parts aren't missing. Building a 912E from the ground up is a risky financial proposition. They're not worth very much when they're all together, so you need to limit the dollars you spend reaching that point.

And personally, my first step would be to paint that engine bay. Then look at engines like the four-cylinder one you saw on ebay. A 912 is a light, agile sports car, but not a very powerful one. Making one muscular is an expensive trick to pull off.

Amen Jack!

You said it all!

Unbeliavebly good value for the buck he got.

I would fix it with as original engine as possible and sell it...and then use money to muscle-out my 930 :-)

That's exactly the motor I want to someday put in a 914!

FIND THAT OLD MOTOR! There HAS to be documentation or ? to figure this out. Have you called every single Pcar shop in the area? Sure, a 6-cylinder would be great but for certain I would be dogging the streets looking for my motor under these circumstances.

Even if it was rebuilt and sold out of storage and frustration you still have the ear of the shop that did the job:maybe they can help find another, etc.? You have a GREAT story here and will probably get a sympathetic ear.

Nice job for $1,200.00!!

John
