What tail came on an 82 SC

I was wondering which whale tail would have be installed as an factory option on my 1982 SC?

Geronimo '74 05-15-2011 12:06 AM

There is only one 'whaletail'.
Besides that you have early turbo tails, which are similar. Later turbo tails, called tea trays. Ducktails and Iroc tails.
Those are the most common on a carrera non turbo bodyshell.
Best fitting are the early turbo tail and the whaletail (standard carrera tail)

j911brick 05-15-2011 12:42 AM

What about the 3.0 tail? What car was full rubber tail used on?

Ed Bighi 05-15-2011 01:26 AM

If I remember correctly, at that time the carrera tail had not been created yet. So it would have either been a 3.3 intercooled turbo tail or maybe the one piece early deck lid/tail as in the non-intercooled 3.0 turbos. But without that extra oil cooler slot in the rear part of it.

I owned a 77 that had the full rubber tail. The SC s from the factory used the turbo tail until the Carrera tail showed in 84.

The early SC's also used the rubber tail. The 3.3 turbo tail was used in later SC production. For sure, an '82 would have had the 3.3 turbo style tail.

^ Agreed. This new thread has a link to an SC with the original rubber rear wing. Quite odd looking IMO. Factory referred to it as a PU wing which I assume means poly urethane.

The p/u tail was used from ~76 to the early SCs, it was usually a dealer installed item, think of it as early "Techquipent", the dealers loved it because no paint was needed. It has the general look of the early whale tail but is very heavy.

early SCs which were factory equipped w/ a tail used the 930 3.3 tea tray but by '82 the final version of the n/a tail was being used.

final n/a whale tail used from '82 to 89

teatray used on '78 up 930 and '78 -81 SC, it wouldn't be surprising if there was some overlap of these
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1224940752.jpg

p/u used from '76 to ~'78(maybe even later if the stock lasted)

Bill V. ,

I don't think the bolt-on to decklid tail (red) in your 1st photo , was introduced until 1984 MY on 3.2 Carrera's

Base part no. : 911.512.043.00 (m473 option)
Rubber Lip part no. : 911.512.091.00 (m473 option)

2Utes 05-15-2011 07:42 AM

My 82SC factory tail is the one Bill V. shows in his second photo he called the tea tray. I have always referred to it as a whale tail. This picture was handy, but not the best to show the tail.

The last time I researched it it was the correct tail and was introduced in '82, yes it was used on the '84 up Carrera 3.2s. As I said it is not at all surprising that teatrays were used that year too as the factory has a penchant for using an older part until supplies run out.

I will look into it again on Mon.

the revised tail which is most associated w/ the '84 3.2 Carrera was introduced in Sept. '81 on MY82 SC, there were a # of other changes associated w/ the 3.2 that were introduced at that time, the new style crankcase w/o the 'oil pan' being another

This is correct for '82 & '83 SC and '84-'89 Carrera

I guess not too many dealers ever installed the PU tail because I don't recall ever seing one back in the day. In fact the first I seen was the one I bought about 15 yrs ago. I have only ever seen one other since then (except in pictures). I guess they are pretty rare. Ddoes anybody know what the real weight difference is?

BTW: I have one for sale if anybody is interested.

Bill,

I'm almost positive that the pu rear spoiler was used up through 1980, the 3.3 turbo style through 1983 and the Carrera 3.2 style starting with the '84 models. I bought an SC in 1983, picked it up at the factory and they were still installing the turbo tails on SC's then.

I'm also fairly sure that the change in the crankcases occurred during the 1983 model year, although I'd have to check the service bulletins to be sure. I want to say that it was in the spring of '83.

My UK delivered 83SC (built in April 83) has the tea tray. I always referred to this as a turbo (or tea tray) tail whereas I identify the Carrera as the whale tail.

From my research Porsche UK spec'd the 911SC's as Sport models which included the turbo tail as standard. It seems that other regions made their own choices about which to use?

My MY83 has the Carrera style crankcase. Built April 1983.

Sorry , But show me something that shows the red bolt on standard lid tail.....

Base part no. : 911.512.043.00 (m473 option)
Rubber Lip part no. : 911.512.091.00 (m473 option)

.... was introduced prior to 1984 MY and i'll believe. Otherwise I've never seen one from the factory on any car prior. And it's not in the pre-1984 MY parts books.

No jabs to anyone , just saying.

-----------------------------------------------

From what I can discern (and the parts books correlate). The all-Poly tail was the optional M473 tail until 1980 MY . If some countries importers (or dealers) chose to use the 'tea-tray' (3.3 930) instead ... that was their call.

Starting at 1981 MY - on , the factory (again parts books) states the optional (M473) is the tea-tray/3.3 930 unit.

I have a suspicion that on GERMAN Market cars (and I do not know if any other Euro markets) . That the early fiberglass Carrera whaletail was used until 1980 instead of either of the others. I'm not certain....unfortunately there do not seem to be enough DE enthusiests on this forum to get the skinny. But for one...you ever seen a German-market 911SC with an all-Poly tail ? I would ask which was used on a DE forum but I am not brave enough to start translating the German.

Wonder why the USA catalog has the 2.7 Carrera tail listed as a "special model USA"? It states +80 in the model column -maybe a typo and should say -80? Based on the catalog alone it appears that the 2.7 Carrera tail may have ended up on some post 77 US cars?

Here is some discussion on the 3.2 Carrera tail as an available option on the later SCs.

That's referring to the Weissach edition cars. They were built in 1980 and they used the same tail that was fitted to the 1975 Carreras.
