Electric seats stopped working
Hello all,
I recently learned that the electric seats have stopped working in my '87 coupe. Since I never adjust my seat I'm not really sure how long this has been an issue but neither the driver's nor the passenger seats perform any or their electric functions. I know they did at one time. My question is could this be a fuse or relay problem? I looked at the fuse box and didn't see anything labeled "seats" or such, am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any advice! Michael

look again...it should be the second fuse from the end closest to the driver.

If it's not the fuse, try cleanig the switch contacts on the seat with contact cleaner.

Thanks for the advice on the switches but since it's both seats that have the problem I am gathering that's not the issue. But since I'm there I might as well clean them anyways!
Michael

Recently I found out the same thing - the wire-harness that plugs into the seat had come loose and lost connection. Look at the connection before you send money on the switches - they are not cheap.

Well I checked fuse #2 and sure enough it had blown so off to the Autozone I went. Got home, proceded to plug the new fuse in when I got this badge of courage:
![]() The fuse blows in my hand. Ouch! Lesson learned, don't work on the electrical components without disconnecting the battery! ![]() Well, my second new 25amp fuse in the assortment kit, fell into no man's land so off I went to Pep Boys to get some more. I get home and find out that the fuse blows instantly upon putting it into the socket (and connecting the battery). SO my new question is where do I go now? Electrical troubleshooting isn't my strong suit but is there anything blatant I should look for? Thanks again for all the help, Michael

well, that's odd! I'd get your voltmeter out and see how much juice is running through that circuit. I'd also unplug your power seats one at a time to see if its a bad switch or bad wiring under the seats. Unplug one side, and if the problem does not go away plug it back in and move to the other seat.
One of my seats is hard wired into the car as those female 8 pin connectors that are part of the car's wiring loom aren't cheap and sometimes disintegrate at the solder points. You might need to visit here:link to used female pwr seat plug That is just a guess though, I think the seats are supposed to be on switched power, although mine aren't--but I should go fix that I guess. Good luck!

Been there done that
![]() OK, you have a short under the seat. There are 2 set of wires (Blue if I recall and Ground) of 4. Check to see if there is a short or crimped wire. When I placed a sub-woofer under the passenger seat, one of the spaded wires was exposed and touching the metal part of the seat. Placed some heat shrink, no more issues. Also note, make sure AC is turned off, it shares the same circuit.

Yeah, maybe the wiring to the seats is crimped and bared between the seat sliders.....but seriously, whatever, sounds like a real life dead flat short to me; could be most anywhere along the line/circuit/wiring. I'd start checking the wiring under the hood, then under the seats and at the switches.

hold fuses on the sides so that doesn't happen. just fixed a seat on an '85 that had two broken bare wires underneath.

..probably (but not absolutely) a loose (hot) wire touching ground (as suggested). Red wire will be the +12 VDC feed to all of the switches' pin #2. GOOD LUCK! Doyle
