915 Shifter Front Bushing Replacement

Quick question about access to this set screw:

When the shift coupler between the rear seats is loosened
does this allow the shift rod to rotate enough to access
the set screw in the front?

Tom

Why do you need to do that? The bushing is actually a nylon part that fits into that cup in your picture.

Bushing replacement

No not the cup bushing, the bushing for the shift rod support piece.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, it does. I just replaced mine. MAKE SURE YOU MARK THE COUPLER AND ROD before you loosen it so you can line it up properly when you tighten it back up.
Also, have some really hot water ready so you can soften the bushing, even with that its a real PIA to get it.

No. The shift coupler does not have to be removed to replace the front shift tube bushing.

Carry a spare wherever you go - just in case. This happened at the Monterey Historics last year - a Porsche year yet, and the closest dealer-supplied part was sitting in Germany. Luckily Dave Loop (Dave Loop European, Del Rey Oaks) saved the day.

BTW, this bushing lasted about 9 years with this configuration, but wear is steady, gradual and inevitable.

Sherwood

PS: The set screw isn't shown.

I loosed that set screw without first loosening the rear coupling. If you remove the bolts on the shift housing, you can reach the set screw with an allen wrench (and then with fingers once it's loose).

shifter bushing replacement

I asked about loosening the shift coupler because I am unable to get in there with an Allen key! I can get the key inserted but am unable to turn it. Just wanted to make sure the entire shift rod turns when the coupler is loosened. I do plan to replace all the shifter bushings since I am installing a Seine Gate shift kit.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Yes, just loosen the shift coupler. The entire rod will rotate and make the set screw very easy to remove up front. You will most likely want to adjust the coupler anyway after replacing the shift bushing.

It is very easy to adjust the coupler.

BTW, the set screw on my shift lever bushing cup has a square head and factory-drilled to allow safety wire (see example photo). It's a lot easier than an internal hex to remove and replace.

Are those little square headed safety wire bolts still available?
