Oil pressure relief

While changing the oil, I removed the oil pressure relief on the bottom of the engine. When the pieces fell into the oil pan I only found the spring and sleeve. I put the assembly back in as shown on the diagram and notice that now when I drive the dauck gauge goes right to 5 (top) after the car warms up. I think that the piston fell out and I did not see it to get it back into the assembly. I have ordered from you a new one and just wanted to see if my suspicion of the missing piston is correct by the dauck readings? Plus my other question is can I install the new piston without draining out all the oil?

Oh man, do NOT run the engine. Post year so the right diagram and part can be ordered.

have you tried to use a magnetic pick up tool to fish other piece out of the oil pan, or poured the oil through a screen (you can get funnel w/ screen at auto parts stores).

If the piston fell out you would not have any oil pressure. Did you have to compress, push hard, on the spring to get it started? If so the piston is still in the engine. It is not unusual for the piston to not fall out.

I check the oil and poured it through the a strainer but no piston appeared. The car does show good oil pressure but my concern was the druck gage going to the top after the engine starts. The car start up fine and runs smooth with the new oil change. No warning signs or knocks or pings. It may not have fallen out but how can I make sure it is there?

If the piston were out, the oil pump would be pushing oil into the pressure relief bore, then right out the bypass or into the sump,yeilding no oil pressure.

Does the pressure drop with low cold idle??? Occasionally,the piston really sticks in the bore and causes the cold pressure to go through the roof - this is not good either.

I see 100 psi at 2000 rpm cold, dropping to 20-40 roughly warm (180-195).

Basically, if you see high cold pressure that gradually tapers off to 45-65 F warm, you are ok.

Take it back apart and count the pieces.
Use a magnet to get the piston out.

Don’t mix these parts with the pressure safety relief that is horizontal.
If you buy new parts, make absolutely sure you have a compatible set of pieces.
There have been a number of changes over the years that require all three parts.
