front wheel dust (bearing) cover removal
I did some searches on different posts and have a question about the front bearings and replacement of them. I have removed the wheels now and am staring at a small dust cover in the middle of the hub which has a threaded 'nipple' in the middle of it. I obviously need to remove that, hence my questioning..
If I go with a slide hammer, what thread size/pattern do I need at the end of the tool for this? If I make a tool that will pull it out while I thread a bolt into it, what bolt size and thread pattern do I need? Thoughts?

Hi Mark.
Jeez, don't you work? ![]() I have seen a thread about this issue but I can't find it now. You might try searching the archives. It is a bit different than the one on my car. EDIT: I found the thread. Look under wheel bearing removal. I don't know how to post a link for you, though.

I do... I am jsut so into this Porsche thing it's not even funny. Every spare minute is spent on this! I am on many audio conferences, it's easier to do this than other work work...I don't have to pay as close attention to my fun activies!
I'll search again, but I spent a few hours last night on this site and others with little to no luck.

You should be able to tap them off with a hammer, working around the edges. If you are worried about marring the finish, maybe use a piece of cardboard to protect it, or use a plastic mallet. Mine came off with just a few light taps with a hammer (I was not worried about hammer marks, though)

Use the U-bolt method with Two exhaust clamps. I works great and doesn't put a scratch on your dust cover. It is well worth the $8 in parts to save the agravation.

I don't have that option as it is into the wheel hub. See the "help needed with spacer" post for pictures.

for those wondering, it is a 10 X corse thread pattern. I got a bolt that fits... now onto a tool that can remove it..

Mark,
I used a long threaded rod that I get from hardware store (cant' remember the thread size but M10x1.5 sounds about right) in conjunction with one of those bodywork dent/ding remover tool and work it like a slide hammer.

I used one of those crazy vice grips with very wide jaws meant for holding things for welding I think (it was a friend of mine's).
I clamped it onto the sides of the cap and pried against it with a large screwdriver. ianc

Grip at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock tightly, and rock up and down in small increments. It will rock right out. You will make two small indentations in the edge, but they won't hurt, and will work the next time.

I don't think some of you understand - the 930 dust caps sit inside the hub with nothing sticking out to grab onto. They have a threaded hole in the cap so you can remove them with a slide hammer.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the turbo dust caps, here is what they look like.
The second picture has a diagram of it (the lower and more recent one).

The recessed configuration exclusive to the Turbo makes the use of a threaded rod or bolt the only way you can do this....with something like a slide hammer... the weld on the cap/nut interface is sometimes bad and the nut may come off...now you've got a big headache....
Otherwise, the "2 x 2" muffler clamps with 14 mm nut" method is the absolute cat's meow....and no hamfisted antics either. I'll edit this and repost if I find the link....absolutely hands-down best and gentlest method. - Wil EDIT ---> Removal of Dust Cap on Frt wheels bearings

Wil Ferch, I was succesful in getting the passenger side dust cover off and replaced the bearings (easier than I thought). I used a threaded rod with some nuts and a steel plate. Worked like a charm..... but, the driver side... guess what, the nut came off!
Can I go somewhere and have someone to weld it back on? Has that been done before or do I have to cut it off into little bits and pieces? The good news is, It was 12 degrees celsius today, so I took it for a spin and she is so HOT...
