slight oil leak, thoughs, help

So i finally got the car all registered and up and running. After taking it out a few times there were no issues. It is a 78 targa, the other day i noticed an oil leak on the rear passenger side. It seems to be below the oil tank. The interesting thing is that, when sitting the car does not leak. After running for a bit and heating up, i park it, on level ground and cut the engine. About 1/2 cup or less of oil leaks out and then stops. I feel as though it it an oi line draining when the car stops. The dip stick still reads full, and that is after a considerable amount has leaked out. I feel i may have put to much oil in to begin with and it is all just flooding out over time. Im going to poke around tonight and see what i can find. Does this sound like any thing that has happened to any one?

thanks
dave

911 engines must have the oil level checked when the engine is running and at operating temperature.

if you are not doing this, you are putting in far too much oil.

go out and drive your car hard, then park on level ground, leave the engine running, and then check the oil.

194 degrees or 1/8" above first mark on temp gauge then check dip stick, if too much, drain her. driving her around until it burns off will make a mess

so i did some poking around in the engine compartment and found the issue. That oil pressure/level sender on the side of the oil tank had come lose. The bolts look like they rattled loose. I tightened them and that seemed to almost completely stop the leak. Im going to get a new gasket for it tomorrow, that should take final care of the issue.

Thanks
dave

so after taking a drive out tonight, i find that it is still leaking. The pressure/level sensor is no longer leaking but there is still an issue. I think it is the filter, i can see oil coming down the engine side of the tank and it seems to come from above where i can see which leads me to think it is the filter.

So there is still an issue. Here is every thing i have done/know

the car is running castrol art synthetic high mileage 20w-50
This may be the issue i know a lot of people say to run non synthetic and i will most likely switch it this weekend.

The oil leek was quite bad at first, i followed it back to the oil pressure sensor plate, it was lose. That has now been tightened and has for the most part stopped leaking. I will be replacing the gasket on that as well, when i have time to do so.

On any not the real issue is as follows when the car is running there is no oil leaks what so ever, cold or hot, nothing. When the car is shut down after being run, no matter how long, oil drips down the engine side of the tank. the flow seems to start above where i can see and i though it was the filter. So i replaced the filter but that did not seem to solve the problem. The interesting thing is that it seems to leak out the same amount of oil every time. After some time it just stops, i though this may be some hose or some thing draining out when not under pressure. Any thoughts??

Thanks
Dave

Not a fan of syn.....lots of leaks are top end. Clean it up and look for a location or area of a leak.

Check all crimps near the oil fill and filter.

Thanks for the advice guys, i picked up a bunch of new hose clamps yesterday, but had to drive the car down to Pennsylvania today for a meeting, it was a great drive, i have started replacing them, S-hose was first. Tomorrow i will get to all the clamps on the top end and see if that fixes it.

Thanks For every thing
dave
