Exaust smell inside 911 cab. even with top up

Hi guys, My first post so bear with me. Sometimes I get an exaust smell inside the car and my eyes start burning, not to mention the aweful smell. Any ideas where it may be comming from? 1985 911 Cab, 3.2. Thanks- Andy

could be your heating system is leaking fumes from a broken exhaust system.

First and free test would be to remove the two flexible hoses that attach the heater flapper boxes with the internal cabin ducts.
Take a spray paint can and cover the two tubes that go into the cabin...the spray paint can covers fit almost perfectly...use some tape to keep them on.

Then see if the smell is still happening.
If no...you need to take a very close look at your heating system, muffler and heat exchangers to see where the leak may be coming from.

Its not safe to drive with those gases in the cabin.

Make sure your red heater levers are down and not kicking in the engine Heater Motor.

Sometimes when you pull your e-brake and you have the leather shroud, the shroud will inadvertently and ever so slightly pull up the heater levers up and cause the motor to engage.

You see the flaps below are left open at this stage and will allow outside area in that area to come in.

To check that the flap are actually opening all the way. Raise the car and have a helper open and close the levers. When levers are up the flaps should be completely closed to only allow heated air from the engine ( no exhaust ) to come into the cab.

When levers are down the flaps should be fully open.

Could be a leaky heatexchanger. Even if the heating was stuck at on you shouldn´t be getting that smell. What sort of condition are the heat exchangers in?

If your 85 is like my 88 you have the expensive fuel hose leaking. It drips right into the blower duct.


Edit: look up this part # 930-110-595-05-M260 (stick it in the window above). Then look at the crimp on the fuel hose at the back of the engine on the drivers (left) side. Is it wet?

+1 on the exchanger.
A minor contributor could be like I found on mine - the shifter boot was removed/missing.

It covers the shifter coupler between the rear of the tunnel and the front of the trans and blocks an unwanted air path to the cabin. They're sometimes sacrificed during a previous engine drop. Look in the rear access to see if it is there.
