help my 930 turbo wont start!

Gents

i have a 1983 930 turbo .I have recently drained the fuel tank as i had a fuel contamination issue .I have just put 5 litres (uk) in there from dead empty .

Turn the engine over it tries to start and but doesnt fire up ,i can hear the fuel pump whirring in the rear but it just wont fire up the engine .It kicked once the very first time i turned the key but not after.

Question: my tank has an 80 litre fuel tank with an 8 litre reserve ,is the 5 litres just insufficient to start it ? Do i need more fuel ?

Many thanks

AKA starting fluid. Most auto parts stores will carry it. Short shot into the intake while cranking the engine. Don't use a lot.

Greast for lawn mower engines that don't see a lot of use.

Aren't there two pumps on a 930?

You could pull an injector and lift the sensor plate under the airbox to see if you're getting fuel.

I'd put twice that much gas in there.

Maybe you could try jumpering the fuel pumps so that they run, and then push down on the sensor plate (930) until you hear the squeal of the injectors shooting fuel. Only do this for a second or two after you hear fuel , or will will fill your cylinders with gas. There will be two fuel pumps on a 930 one on the left side frame rail near the engine, and the other is under the fuel tank, mounted to the front suspension crossmember. Make sure you can hear both pumps running. I believe your car has two fuel pump relays, so you can jumper each one individually and see if each one runs.
Hopefully all of that crud from the tank did not make it back into the fuel head. Probably a good idea to change the fuel filter as well.

thanks gents ,some of these suggestions are beyond my knowledge but if all else fails ie the 5 litrs ive just got making it 10 litres doesnt work then i will have to dig deeper and go through your suggestions one by one.

It was running fine prior to me deliberately running it until the gas ran out ,a tad lumpy cos of the contamination but running ,it ran out of gas so i drained about a litre from the bottom of the tank to make sure it was totally empty .

Anyone at PELICAN got any ideas ?

Hopefully more gas should do it so fingers crossed .tHANKS GENTS

I believe there are a lot of fuel filters?mesh strainers in the fuel line - but more than that cannot help you. with one fuel relay removed my 930 will fire as the starter turns over but will not fire on its own.

Try swapping a couple of the black round relays on the fuse blocks for the red (fuel) ones - just do this temporarily to see if starts as they are not intended to be used/ swapped permanently.

Otherwise it sounds like a fuel blockage - may have to hunt down these fuel filters

I dont know the location of these filters but maybe others will chime in?

regards
Ben

gents ive put 10 litres uk which is 2.64 us gallons in and no joy .i guess waynes book stating 3 us gallons or 11.35 litres is a hard and fast rule?

I would have thought the engine would still be trying to fire on 10 litres surely?
This is frustrating as i dont have the money to hire a porsche mechanic to sort this .I will go get more fuel whilst my battery is charging .Any idiots step by step guide with pics would be most appreciated or if Wayne Dempsey is watching ? Please help

thanks

Its possible that running the pumps dry caused some damage. You really need a CIS fuel pressure gauge to diagnose this system beyond anything very basic. You also should have a book on basic CIS operation and the factory manuals for the 930. For now the starting fluid idea is the best option, but don't ever do it. A 1 second burst is all you need (but ether dries pretty quick so don't goof around). I hope this is not your only car. If you can't afford to have the car repaired you might want to consider a different car. 930s are not cheap to own and this is not the last time you will have a probelem.

You should have two fuel pump relays that are red: One in the boot and one in the left rear engine compartment (may be different on RHD cars). The other poster was suggesting you remove the red ones and replace with black ones, but only temporarily. You can also use a jumper wire to power the pumps manually, but I forget which terminals are used to do that.

problem solved! well at least the starting problem anyway. After 22 lires and a few cranks its kicked into life .

New problem however,i have plumes of bluish smoke out the exhaust and oil dripping out the tail pipe. The oil pressure is at just under 4 ,temp is below halfway and oil quantity way up in the white (see pics).

Please tell me its just to much oil ? any ideas gents how to solve this ?

Does the smoke go away or get worse when you rev the motor? Does it get worse when you let off the gas? How are you checking the oil? You said you had this car for 15years so I assume you know the proper procedure for checking oil on a 911. On a turbo lots of things can cause it to blow oil.
