Thumbs up Stop SMOKIN! The Cure 3.2

Well, after many years of chasing down my vacuum leak and swore I was not going crazy. I finally found the LEAK!

I want to say thanks to Sergio Nardi Owner/Operator of GAMEFACE in La Habra, OC. Home - www.game-facemotorsports.com 562-694-3880

He was quite busy but he said it would only take 45 minutes to an hour if no issues. I made an A.M. appointment and waited for him to find the vacuum leak.

He too was skeptical that I had a vacuum leak and he even said she sounded good, idled strong and steady even though her Tach showed otherwise.
Even a well respected Pelican here said I was CRAZY

Well, I ain't so CRAZY NOW:

Took off the AFM and FILTER, PLUGGED INTAKE and connected the SMOKER to the Cruise Control Vacuum Hose.

Checked in trunk for a leak in the MC Brake Booster Vacuum, Under the Car at the Brake Booster Vacuum Hose, Left Side then to the Throttle Body, VOILA, SHE WAS SMOKIN

At first, he thought the Throttle Body was leaking at the accelerator pivot. OMG! Then he put a mirror behind it and found it originated from the "U CONNECTION" Vacuum Line, looked from the Passenger Side the hose was weeping droplets. FOUND! He felt around the hose and found a TEAR at the lower connection.

HELL YEAH! I am not CRAZY!!!

1.5 hours later, and a new hose ( old hose was fused, WTF ). No More Vacuum Leaks.

He did say that the PCV Valve next to the Oil Fil Neck tends to clog or fail and that too will mess with the idle. He said go order one & DIY. So Cool.

Thanks again Sergio!!! You the MAN!!!

Jim

Hi Jim,

What makes you think you have vacuum leak in the first place?
I have 3.2 G50 and initial starting idle hunts a little before settling down, could that be a vacuum leak too?

JoriJori,

She ran perfect except the low idle, with SW 911 Chip it is supposed to idle at 880. She idled at 780 and I could smell sweet fuel odor when I come to a stop from speed.

Your symptoms could be a vacuum leak.

But sounds like, someone adjusted it with a leak:
Rich fuel mixture (vacuum leak)
High Base Idle (due to vacuum leak)
Fowled Idle Control Valve.

Test your ICV, when she hunts, take a screw driver's handle end and tap on it, if she clears up then you need to clean and lube it off the car. Check the OHMs too.

If she doesn't then check your base idle via jumpering B&C at the relay socket in the engine bay left side. G50 = 880 RPMs base idle. Remember the mark between 1000 RPMs and mark below 800 RPMs is 900. So you want it just a tick below the middle. Our tach starts at 200 RPMs.

If this doesn't help then check your AFR on the Air Flow Meter with a LM1 or LM2.

If this does not help or if you can not properly adjust the AFR then you have a vacuum leak and may need to find a shop with a SMOKER to find it before swapping parts.

Jim

Any ideas for a DIY smoker? It doesn't sound like something any of the shops around here would have. I would feel great if I got my cars low idle search fixed.

FLAPS have them very expensive $600-700 USD.

I know it works by literally burning oil then the mist is pressurized and emits smoke.

The trick is not too much PSI but enough to show the leak.

Wrench actually connected an air compressor to it but the SMOKER appear to regulate the PSI while smoking.

My wrench did not charge me that much, remarkably reasonable considering. Under $100 including installation of the new hose but it was a BIOTCH to remove the fused/stuck hose.

Fix the leak finally PRICELESS

i heard of someone making a homemade smoker.
at your own risk!
get a shop vac. hook up the hose to blow instead of suck. get a smoke bomb at your local fireworks stand. hook up the end of the hose to your intake (you might have to get creative here but the snorkel might be a good spot), light the smoke bomb, put it in the vac, turn it on and voila. go search for smoke.

That is creative, I like to see that in action.
