I have a 66 911 set up for the 901 Trans. I am wondering what is the best way to use my 902 5sp with this set up. I would like to use the 901 Axles but they bolt to my 901 with 8mm bolts and the 902 trans has 10mm treads on the output shaft flange. It modifying a set of axles with the 902 CV Joint on the tranny side the way to go? Output shafts are not interchangeable between the 901 & 902?

First, WELCOME to the Pelican 911 Technical Forum ![]() You will find a lot of help here. Please post the transmission type number and transmission number from each transmission. They are stamped on the rib under the differential area. When you describe the number and size bolts, the choices for each transmission axle flange (usually) are: Four short M10 bolts for the ’64-’66 Nadella axles, Six M8 bolts for the SWB ’66-‘68 Lobro axles (see note below), Four M10 bolts (~50 mm long) plus two 10 mm roll pins for the LWB (’69) 901/902 transmissions. Note: There are two (non-interchangeable) transmission axle flanges that fit the 901/902 transmission and the SWB Lobro axle. The difference is the introduction of the ‘simplified’ differential in 1968. The earlier (non-simplified, ‘regular’) version has an aluminum plug with an O-ring in the center of the flange. The ‘simplified’ version, you can see the hex of the stretch bolt in the center of the flange. (Do NOT remove both transmission axle flange stretch bolts simultaneously with the 'simplified' version.) There is a dangerous issue with the 'simplified' version, it can fail catastrophically unless serviced or updated. What axles (Lobro or Nadella) are in your ’66 chassis? The Nadella are interesting for historic sake but less reliable. The Lobro are later technology and far more serviceable. The two axle assemblies (with stub-axles) are directly interchangeable. What do you know about the 902 5-speed? Do you know its history? Have you looked inside? Are the castings aluminum or magnesium? What chassis (type, model, year, VIN) did it come out of? I’m concerned that this might be from 1969 and possibly more difficult to configure for your ’66 chassis. Please post some images of both transmissions (and your ’66 car ![]() Best, Grady
