B&B Heat Exchangers with other than B&B muffler?

Anyone use B&B heat exchangers but not use their mufflers?

I keep hearing that their muffler's are crap, especially the early ones that drone and welds break.

I have a 3.6 in the car and SSI's right now but am told by several people that the SSI is just too small a primary tubing for a 3.6 and need to go bigger.

The SSI's I have are with a Dankse stainless "banana" muffler and its just about right, but the "Two bolt" flanges will not bolt up to the "three bolt" flanges on the B&B HE's.

Anyone "been there and done that" with these parts?

Thx,

Joe

The SSI's are definitely too small, B&B headers will wake the car up.

I used a Flowmaster but it's loud.

GaryR recently adapted a Magnaflo #12568 to his and it's LimeRock legal, which is saying a lot.

If you can find a good welder you could probably move the inlets on the Dansk banana to accept the B&B spacing, flanges can be bought to match

I had a magnaflow on mine - that was loud! - then an MK - then I went to 993 heat exchangers with a MK single out (on the 3.4 cab)

With this car (that's in the process of getting a 3.6) I plan on installing this muffler that shakinjoe found - (I guess from a mercedes)

I used 993 HEs, modded flanges to fit the 964 heads....custom muff and cat.

The only things worse than B&B mufflers are the makeshift B&B heater boxes. I'd go with some big George's if you can get by without heat.

I have a Magnaflow 11385 (4"x14" case w/2.25" in/outlets) on my 3.6L w/Fabspeed headers w/heat. Between 1.5-3K rpm, it drones like a mother. Above 3K rpm, it's quiet(er). I'm looking at options to try to quiet it down a bit.

GaryR's Magnaflow 12568 (5"x22" case w/2.5" in/outlets) is bigger and thus probably quieter. I may look at this as an option.

I have a nice stainless Dansk banana muffler from my 2.7L engine and making it fit my Fabspeed headers would be a BIG task I think. The outlets from the headers are so far apart, even if you redid the muffler inlets, it would take some serious head scratching to mate them together.

We used a Dynomax on a 3.6 conversion I participated in. We used the "flows all directions" dual in dual out muffler. Dynomax® Performance Exhaust | Mufflers | Super Turbo™ Mufflers Sounded nice and not too offensive.

The Fabspeed/Flowmaster that was originally on it was indeed LOUD.

Gary's installation looks like a very nice one- the O2 bungs and flange clamps are a clean install

I use their headers and muffler, the 4 inch tips set alarms off reduced the tail pipes to 2.25 and i am really please with the sound, i can see the mufflers having problems if the bands get loose, Kevin

Cannot live without heat. Some of my trips are up in the mountains so need the heat to work.

Bill,

Thanks much and your post gave me an idea. I live right around the corner from B&B (like 2 miles away) and may head over by their place and see if they would sell me just a set of flanges. Then I could use anything or build an adapter to use various mufflers.

JoeBob, I do not need a cat here, the car is registered in a small town where the smog test is not done, but I do like your system.

Great ideas guys, thanks much!

Joe

A contributing factor to their muffler failures is the flimsy bracket they use to support the muffler. It's a nicely designed bracket in terms of fitment. But it's not sturdy enough. The bracket needs to be supported/triangulated with some gussets to keep it from flexing. The flexing is what causes the muffler end casing to crack and that's why B&B puts the supports on the muffler inlet pipes. What they should be doing is putting the supports on the muffler bracket!

The cat is part of the sound suppression....the spiral type muff after it gives it a nice burble.

Joe Bob 06-16-2011 09:36 AM

BTW, Joe....did you see the thread on the converted banana sport muff with 993 HEs?

I have an extra sport muff sitting in the garage that can be converted.

If you don't like the sound, send it back. You'll just need a couple of 90s and the flanges. If you use 993 HEs, they exit facing eah other unlike the B&B and older/early style 911 equal length HEs.

Just pay shipping.....

What is this muffler off of? I want to check this out.

I have the Dynomax 17725 on my B&B and it was much louder then I wanted. I plugged one of the outlets and it is real respectable until it hits 2800 and then it sounds like a motorcycle taking off. (Pretty cool but too conspicuous for me). I ended up putting a glasspack between the muffler and the tip and that makes it liveable but still very aggressive at full throttle above 2800.

Here is one Ben built for the B&B headers, its a bit loud and I think he only made two of them.

I have no idea - and yes, - I had the 2nd B & B muffler that Ben made.

Was wondering if Ben had played around with this at all.

I like loud but my neighbors do not so thats not going to work.

This muffler guarantees a letter from the neighbors!
