Post Driving w/ no muffler...hurt motor or just piss off the neighbors?

I got my 74 exchangers on today, however the Supertrapps won't be here 'til Friday. If I drive it around w/ no muffler can I hurt the motor due to the lack of backpressure, or will it just be obnoxiously loud? Don't the guys at the track run megs w/ essentially no mufflers? Then again, they don't care if they wear their motors down a little quicker...

Straight headers with no exhaust? Upset neighbors? I guess it depends on how many times you drive by

Colby,

Why do you care what the neighbors think?

It's the cops that WILL give you a hard time about it! I doubt there is much of an excuse they will let you by on, unless it truly is ... just one trip around the block!

I confess...I took it around the block. Man, it sounds sweet! It's louder at idle than at part throttle. Full throttle...WHOA! Hehehee...don't think I'll get away with it too many more times though. It won't hurt the motor driving it this way will it?

Your restriction is in the exchangers so your ok. Most performance mufflers add very little restriction.

Can't possibly sound any worse or any more loud than those piece of ***** Harleys that blast by my house every day. Apparently there are no noise laws.

Now, now, rarly8. Lets not dump on the Harleys (I own one). The first thing I did when I purchased my Harley was to throw away the stock pipes and replace them with louder ones. Guess who sold and installed them? The Harley dealer. I'm assuming that the dealer would not sell/install a product that exceeds the legal limit on decibel sound.

Amen, Rarly! The seemingly endless parade of un-muffled H*****'s have left me totaly devoid of concern for being too loud myself. I think of it like noise-karma that I have built up by having to listen to those pieces of junk.

(The worst part is, they don't even sound like a hi-perf motor, slogging along at WOT and 900 RPM.)

My Offroad bike has the stock muffler that I modified to take a Supertrapp at the stock mufflers outlet, the only noise you hear is chain rattle and rocks bouncing off the skidplate. Steve

It used to be said that running without a muffler could cause valve warpage, from the rush of cold air that hit the valve stem when you shut the engine off. We usta stuff tennis balls into the headers (356 four-cam Carreras) the instant the engine was shut off. But I've never seen McLaren or Ferrari use tennis balls...
