I was looking at changing jobs recently to a position where I would not have a company car. I was at dinner with my wife and discussing what changes this job change would have on our life. I said that I would need to get another car since I would no longer have a company car and I asked her what her criteria would be for another car. She is not much into cars or my interest in Porsches and her answer with a liberal dose of disdane was... "I don't care what you get, get whatever you want!"

My response was... "Remember those words, my dear.".

A few weeks later this nice, low miles (58k) 81 SC followed me home. Her response when I drove up was surprisingly positive. This was about 6 weeks ago and I am getting familar with the car - thus far a good story.

This thread needs to be bumped.

What a great thread. Here's my story.

It all started in 1996 when 15 year old me answered the door. It was my uncle looking for my dad. Behind him I saw his brand new Boxster.

Fast forward a few years, I was focusing on my career but owning a Porsche had always been in the forefront. (being a game warden is not conducive to owning luxury sports cars!) My dad owned a Boxster, that uncle had graduated to a C4S of the year. My cousin had a sweet 951 and another uncle bought a 996 to comute to work at Home Depot.

Every time I'd go back home my dad was always looking forward to handing me the keys to his 986, I'd have a blast. I'd take pride in waxing it and fixing up a few things. He ended up keeping it for 13 years. It was a great car.

At 27 I took the plunge. I bought a $13K CDN 1999 arctic silver 986. What a mistake. First off I financed it at 12% yikes! Aside from that, I can't explain it but it just didn't feel right. I ended up selling it less than a year after. I did have fun with the car, I lived in Vancouver at the time and ripped up and down the sea to sky highway.

After selling the Boxster I knew my next Porsche would be a 911. After lots of research I settled on a 997.2

I wanted:
Cab
Triple black
Standard
Sport chrono package

I looked for a long time drove a few but in the mean time then I discovered............ The air cooled world! Magnus Walker, Signer, Petrolicious...

I was converted, unfortunately the prices had already peaked but I looked everyday online. It just so happened that a triple black '84 cab came up for sale 100 miles from my place. I called the lady who explained that her husband had recently passed away. On June 17th, we drove from Golden to Vernon. I met with her and her late husband's friend and had a look at the car (it was the first air car I'd seen). It took me about 2 seconds to figure out this was not a $45K car. We still went for a drive but I thought she was so far off that I didn't even entertain making an offer. I left it at that.

In July I almost pulled the trigger on a stunning '89 Venetian blue Targa. $60K was way above my budget. Some German guy bought it the next day. The dealer in Quebec was quite a character, he was willing to finance the difference over a few months free of charge.

Fast forward to October 29th. Upon opening the autotrader app, I see there's 35 cars in my search. There have been 34 for the past week. Who's the noobie? '84 cab triple black out of Vernon. $31K. Interesting.

Now to go back a bit, that car was a 6/10 cosmetically but mechanically it seemed to be a 9/10. It had service records going back 20 years all at the same shop in Kamloops BC.

I called the mechanic (she had provided the shops name during my visit) and had a long chat with him. He told me that the PO spared no expense when it came to repairs and maintenance.

I called the owner and we struck a deal pending a PPI.

I've owned the car for three months now and I'm in love with it! I've changed the hood struts, cleaned the regulators, added Carrera decals, changed the gauge bulbs and am in the process of fixing a minor front end collision. I love working on it and can't wait to drive it in the spring!

I bought mine from a customer of mine (general aviation avionics shop owner at the time). He would drive it in to the hangar while we worked on his plane. He mentioned he was going to sell it (he was the original owner). It is a 1985 and this was around 1989. I bought it and have had it ever since. It has over 250,000 miles and continues to delight.

Very simple for me. I sold my SC and went Porsche less for 3 years. And one day I just needed to have another one. I looked around ... and found an owner that was borderline on letting his GT3 go. So we talked and he agreed to sell it. I showed up with a check and drove it home. It was good.

I bought mine from a guy that worked at the same place I did. He'd had it for awhile, and there were several fairly minor things wrong with it. He'd parked it in his driveway and covered it with a piece of black plastic. He was one of those guys who faked lots of things - like his amount of knowledge of cars. It had been parked long enough the gear oil had pretty much leaked out of the tranny, the front brake hoses had swelled shut & other similar things. The car needed a complete refurbish, which I'm still working on.

I sold my Aubergine '73 911E w/ 2.7RS-spec MFI engine back in 2010. Within a few months, I was getting the itch for another 911, but with good A/C as we were still living in the mid-Atlantic area back then. I set my sights on a 964 C2, as that is the model I was looking for when I ended up buying a 993 (long since sold) back in 2000.

I scoured all the usual online sites for a pristine 964 C2, and also looked at most of the PCA region's classified ads each month. I finally located the car to buy on the north side of Chicago. I flew out to see it, took it for a PPI, and bought it. The '93 964 was a garage queen with only around 33k miles on it. I couldn't be happier with this car.

In 1992 I was driving a 1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE. I had bought a special edition model with the idea it would hold its value better, and when I was ready I could get top dollar and buy a Porsche. By 1992 my wife and I had bought a house and we were between kids, so it seemed like the time was right. I sold the RX-7 for $6K around September, and started looking for a 911 in the $10K range. Back then at that price it was going to be a long-hood. I found a 1970 or 1971 911T Targa in Hemmings. The car was in Indiana. The owner sent me a video of the car driving, I sent him a deposit and started planning a trip out to pick it up.

Before I could finalize plans, a Fedex envelope arrived in the mail. The guy couldn't bear to part with the car, and he sent me back the deposit. I couldn't change his mind, so I went back to searching. Found another possible car in Hemmings, this one a 1973 with a "dealer" (just a guy that sold cars on the side) in NJ. Can't remember why, but after talking to him I decided to pass on it. He asked me if I was interested in an SC. I said sure, but they cost a lot more than my $10K limit. He said he had one he was trying to move quickly, and he'd sell it for $10K.

Wasn't perfect. Repainted with extra metallic, no heat, AC didn't work, front hood had a couple of shallow dents. Had once been in a front end accident and was repaired with fenders, bumper, and front valence from a Carrera. But I was willing to accept less than perfect for the price. My Dad and I drove down, I took the 911 for a test drive, gave the guy a check, and drove it home. No PPI. It turned out to be a decent deal. No rust, but the gearbox ended up needing major work. I still have the car, but I haven't driven it in 20 years. Determined to try and get it back on the road this summer, but struggling to make the time to get it put back together.

I have bought two cars sight unseen and shipped across Canada.

With the 911 in 2004, the PPI mechanic acted as the broker. Both cars worked out great for me. I still love my 1972 911T targa and have never regretted buying the car.

Love This Thread fellas,

I hadn't owned a Porsche since I sold my 993 C4 Cab in late 2006, the economy had taken a downturn. I had rentals vacant and the bills were piling up so she had to go. Over the next 10 years my interest were elsewhere, I built my dream mobil man cave a 2002 Ford E350 7.3 PSD

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e75db42337.jpg

Restored a 1968 Stang for my son, who decided that he didn't want it after it was completed and asked me to buy him something newer.....lol kids, needles to say I ended up with the stang.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...69f933f6f9.jpg

A few months back I came across a video of Magnus Walker on YouTube and I was hooked once again.

I contacted a cousin of mine that I sold my 1974 911 Targa too back in late 1997, he enjoyed the car for a few years until it began puffing white smoke, fearing the worse he parked the car in his garage in 2001 and it's sat there covered undriven ever since....Well until I found out that is lol. After about 40 min worth of haggling over the phone a deal was struck, we traded pinks my 68 stang for the 74 targa!

Well I'd like to say that's were it all ends lol but pop some popcorn cause it's gets very interesting from here.

While perusing Craigslist one night I found a 1980 Petrol Blue 911 SC "turbo look" , the asking price was $40,500. I wasn't looking for a second car but I couldn't help myself so I messaged the owner, a few days later I received a reply and after a few emails I suggested that I'd like to have a PPI done by a third party....Well things quickly went down hill! The seller sent me a long email expressing that maybe I'd be better off buying a different Porsche and he thanked me for my interest WTF... I sent many emails with no reply, I sent him a certified letter apologizing that wasn't excepted and it was returned, so I gave up.

"Back to the 74"

Meanwhile I came across an engine for sale here on pelican,

I was planning on having the original 2.7 rebuilt by Al Kosmal of X-FAKTORY, we had been messaging back and forth when I came across the ad for a 993 3.6 complete w/915 LSD ready to drop in, it came with everything! I had to have it so I messaged @mreid and posted that I'd take it instantly.
While in transit I decided that the 74 needed a little more TLC then originally anticipated and since I was contacted by another fellow pelican that lived within 80 miles the 3.6 was sold.

=IT MUST BE FATE=

The very next day I came across an ad on Autotrader for the 1980 911 SC that I wanted to have inspected, the price had been lowered! What the hell is going on.... Please understand I'm very tenacious when I want something and I decided to get sneaky. I created a fake email profile and sent the seller another message, now I know some of you are thinking WTF lol but please try to understand here lol. I told the seller my name was Steven Delmeco lol don't ask, and after about a dozen emails we came to an agreement.
I told some of my friends what I had done and they thought I was nuts lol, they felt the ad was obviously a scam but I thought differently. I figured the seller was in his mid 60's, probably didn't like using a computer and had heard all the horror stories about selling a car online. This 911 was his baby, he was the 2nd owner and had owned it since 1988, he didn't have to sell it.

Upon arrival we introduced ourselves, at this point I'm still Steven Delmeco. I inspected the car very thoroughly, decided everything was on the level and we headed to Wells Fargo. We had agreed to finalize the transaction at the bank, cashier check in my hand title in his. While in line I figured now's the time....So I looked over at the seller and said my name is actually JR Rodriguez......He stood there quite for a few seconds, I apologized for being deceptive but explained that I truly was interested and wanted to buy his car and didn't understand what had happened before.

He said screw it lol were here and your buying my car thats all that matters!!

AZUL was acquired!!

10 years ago I found my 1980 Porsche 911 SC that originated from Beverley Hills Porsche in Studio City, CA. I was the first response to the ad and the owner was desperate to sell.
When we met I asked whats up with the urgency and what's wrong with the car. He told me he was a movie studio stage carpenter in the Teamsters union. He was working on a movie that had acquired a 356 that he was desperate to get when filming was completed. I got the 911 SC I wanted and he got the 356 he wanted. Its all good since then, she spent a few years on the road and now she is a track queen with a 3.6 L heart transplanthttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1486408819.jpg

My 85 was for sale on Craig's list in a tiny sports car shop in Temecula for $12000. That was 2010. Price was low so I did not drive to see it. Thought something was wrong. Finally after a week it was still there so i made the drive from San Diego. (60) miles. When I got there it was on the showroom floor with no leaks and nice shape with records. Black paint had a detail and interior was pretty good. I told the sales guy, "I will buy this car!" Coast credit union said it was worth $18,000 and gave me a classic car loan. I have had 20,000 trouble free fun miles.

1992, not much internet around. Had to get info from a few books and magazines. I knew I wanted a wide body, had to be a Targa. I read about the G50, so I wanted that also. Found mine in one of those 'toy store' type places in Ft Lauderdale. Not even knowing about M491 I set out to a) make sure it wasn't a fake and b) make sure it never had any paint work. Since then I haven't regretted a minute of ownership!

Here's a picture from earlier this morning:

You sold and Aubergine 1973?

Yes, I'm an idiot. Everyone feel free to kick me.

Well.......let's see. How do I say this without sounding like a complete derelict teenager? I guess just start at the beginning.

The year was 1977, I was 17, the original owner bought it new and had it for a couple months before he went to Europe for a week. He knew I was a responsible young man......asked if I could feed his cat while he was gone. ABSOLUTELY I can I told him (knowing full well of his recent purchase).

Long story short....the day he left the country, I pulled it out his garage and drove it like I stole it.
6 years later my father bought it from him. In 2006 dad sold it to me for $1.00. Best $1.00 I ever spent!

Opened my second restaurant in 2001 and had my eyes on a 1995 993...wife said you deserve it. spun it 6 months later...bought my 1998 C2S in 2004 sold in 2010 due to irreconciable differences. Found my 1978 SC after a two year nation wide search on cars.com 10 miles from my house. Shop was closed due to power lines down due to blizzard, went to see it through the window in two feet of snow..said I will buy it PPI dependent....

So my story begins with a casual conversation with my good friend and former college roommate on the golf course over a golf outing. I mentioned in passing of my interest to purchase a ‘project’ car for me and my then 11 year old son to wrench on weekends and evenings. You know, to teach him some mechanical skills and have a little father son together time.

He calls me some six months later, somewhat out of the blue, and reminds me of the conversation and then says, “what about my 911.” I hadn’t seen it in years and knew it had been off the road for some time. I say, “oh man, that would be a great car to mess around with, but that’s likely more than I have to spend.”

He laughs and says, “I want you to have it.”

I say, “I understand, but…how much are you looking to get for it?”

He says, “nothing…I want to give it to you.”

I respond that there’s no way I can accept it, but he is adamant and says, “you’ll accept it, because that's what I want do.”

I’ve had it for six years and thank him, and my lucky stars every day!
