930 Fuel Gage Quantity Error

Hello all-

Let me start by saying I have tried to do a search of these forums to solve this problem, and have not found an answer, and/or I have not asked the Forum Search Genie the question in the right sequence of words.....

I am on the road in my '77 930, having been forced to evacuate for the recent huge forest fires in Arizona over 2 weeks ago..... the fuel gage on the 930 has suddenly acting funny- it won't indicate over about 5/8 full tank when the tank is full. Tapping on the gage pilot style gets it to bounce to 3/4 momentarily, then it indicates 5/8 again. When the fuel quantity gets down to 5/8 and below, the gage operates normally.....

I have: taken the fuel sender out and apart- the float slides easily, no crud/varnish anywhere, the slide wires and electrical contacts look good- no obvious problems.... Sprayed everything with carb cleaner... Checked the fuses- most are fresh, clean contacts w/o oxidation....

I have not: had the chance to pull the sender out again, take it apart, re-connect the fuel gage electrical plug and ground the sender, and then move the float to see if the gage needle moves with the movement....

So Electrical Gurus: does this sound like a gage or sender problem? anybody had something similar?

thanks for the help.....

Disconnect Battery then Pull the gauge carefully. Check if ground has a good contact, remove and polish both connector and spade if need.

If this does not help, dis-assemble and re-flow the joints.

Next would be the sender unit. Search for re-furbing the sender unit.

Last would be to replace sender unit.
