Transmission question with pics

I bought a rebuilt txmn rather than have mine repaired. In preparing for the swap I ran into a little problem. The clutch release lever on my 79 transmission has a pin holding it onto the clutch release cross shaft. pic 1

note hole at end of scredriver. My cross shaft has a groove for the pin but the replacement transmission shaft does not. The replacement is from a 1983. The pin is not shown in PET and not referenced in Bentley (301-5).

I am planning to swap the crosshafts, still I wonder why the change. The older transmission clutch release lever is better secured on the 79 than the 83 and the question remains, which is best. I am filp flopping on the issue. Any advice from somebody who has done it before?

it doesn't need the pin. later ones don't use it. you could always swap the shaft if you feel the need.

Thanks, I'm trying not to feel the need.

Make sure that you put a nice thin coating of high-quality grease on the shaft before you slide the cross-arm (lever) on...

Does anyone know if the rollpin can be punched out from both sides? I only have access to one side (due to Heat exchangers) and trying to tap it out from there but until now it won't move ... I just want to make sure it is not cone shaped and can be removed from both sides ...

it's a straight bore, so either side, but they're a bittch sometimes. a pointed air hammer bit helps get them moving.
