Anyone have any tips for trying to get the 4 clips off the evaporator blower motor housing (car is an '87 911)?

Use a screw Driver, but take care if they fall down you will need to fish them out thru the passengerside floor board.

Yep they have a hole in them if you can hook a wire or string in them before they go flying. Leave the string on when you put it back together cause it will take several attempts to get them back on. If the whole assembly is coming out not so much a problem for removal as they will be in the bottom of the box. Ken

Evaporator Box Spring Clips...

Alex,

You should be asking for help on how to get the spring clips back on... Some of our members have done it, I think it's nearly impossible! As a matter of fact I broke a couple of the plastic tabs just trying to get the spring clips off, so be very careful.

Griff of Griffith's Air Conditioning told me that he runs a screw through the plastic tabs and does away with the spring clips. I'm installing brackets and lose nut anchor plates to make the top half of the box accessible, but that's a lot of work.

If I remember correctly, I think I used a small pair of snap-ring pliers to remove/install...

As noted, getting the clips back on is incredibly difficult. Is it necessary to put ALL of the them back on?

Alex,

Yes... if you don't the top and bottom halves could partially separate and your cold air could be blown out into the smugglers box. If you were desperate I imagine you could use duct tape or aluminum foil tape to secure the joint, but that would be a last resort.

As been mentioned previously, if you attempt to re-install the spring clips, be sure that you tie a string to them so when they drop into the bottom of the smugglers box you can go fishing...

The clips are a pain. I use zip ties on the tabs. Works well. If you like the metal clips, don't force them over the plastic tabs. Slide them on the plastic tabs from the side to remove them or install. That way the clips only open less than a millimeter when putting them back on.

Timely thread.
I'm wrestling with this today. Trying to get the darned thing apart - and I expect I just made a boo-boo. Decided to open up the refrigerant system (yeah, I know...) and am still having trouble getting the whole thing out. Do I really need to work on it in place?
Problem I'm having is that I cant get the clips off, the nuts inside the housing appear to fall off when you remove the screws, and the whole housing doesnt seem to want to come out of the smugglers box. Do I just need to pull harder?
I'm trying to get the evaporator housing ass'y out, as the blower motor sounds bad (horrible squeal when running the motor). Would like to disassemble, replace motor and reassemble on a bench. Then will have to find an A/C guy to recharge for me.

Any tips?

NutMeg,

Have you removed the plastic duct flange at the firewall under the passenger toe board? It has 4 sheet metal screws.
