shifter bushing question

I am replacing the 2 bushings in the shift mechanism of my 69S. Does the ball on the end of the shifter sit right into the ball cup bushing,or does it sort of ride partially in the bushing? Almost looks like the ball on the end of the shifter is too big or the bushing is not big enough.

It should "snap" into the bushing, not ride on top; sometimes it takes a fair amount of pressure - like leaning on it with one's upper body weight. Be sure the ball and bushing are lubed with grease before assembling. Jim
