Replacement 911 Dash Ideas
With my 70' IROC build coming to an end and with the windshield needing to be installed. We found out that my original dash was damaged and could not be reused which then leads into various options:
- new factory dash (too rich for my blood) - used dash and have it covered (solid option) - used dash and install it as is (saves some $$$ and adds to the patina) - fiberglass or carbon fiber dash (lightweight and looks good, money savings) - So many options: Getty, GT-Racing, Rennspd, Damon, etc - which who makes a good dash or are they all coming out the same factory? - ABS plastic dash tops.. read about them but haven't really found any. Looking for opinions and what you've done in this matter. As for the use of the car, it has been built up as a street legal track car. *an example, not my car* ![]() Last edited by CaryPhotography; 09-14-2014 at 04:32 PM.. |

You might want to give Rob Budd a call at Classic 9 Leather Shop. Classic Nine Leather Shop.
I've never used him, but his work is said to be excellent. He might have some ideas on whether your dash is truly unrepairable and, if so, what you can do to replace it. HTH.

I love the Fiber glass, but I thought that there was a post about the glare that one gets off of these, or am I way off?

all jokes aside, you do bring up a good point about glare from fiberglass high gloss dashes. To battle that I was considering the idea of wrapping the dash in 3M's 1080 car cast vinyl using either their Deep Dark Matte Black, Matte Black, Carbon Fiber, or Brushed Black Aluminum. Another idea would be spraying a rubberized matte black finished paint. This would help dampen vibrations, stop objects from sliding off the dash, and cut down glare. |

I found that the new Porsche OEM dashes are not that expensive. Currently, they are on backorder, but Sunset Porsche quoted me a price of under $1,200 shipped, and my understanding from the last batch, is that they fit well. To me that's a better option than trying to find a core and refurbishing because you'll probably have as much invested into the dash but quality may not be as good.

tobluforu,
I have a C/F dash on my 996. Yes, glare can be a problem. I recently had to replace it due to cracks from the sun. If I had thought about it more, I would have gotten it in a matte finish. I pay around $650 with shipping from Germany.

I have seen some where guys have covered with alcantara. Not sure if they started with their existing cracked dashes, or started with FG. I know it is not for purists, but does look pretty good.

Classic 9 did my 73 dash, i ordered new W/S trim from the local Porsche dealership and installed a new W/S the same weekend. However, the whole project took me about 1 year, acquiring the stuff, getting the dash re-done and finally the install. Turned out great.

George -- Pelican handle Geshagi (I think that MIGHT be spelled right) does beautiful work on dash recovering. His prices are very competitive. In the end you'll get a better dash even than those Porsche replacement pieces that supposedly fit very well. - Matt
