How does the parking brake cable attach to the adjuster?

I have no parking brake at my 79 930 at the moment but I need to install one (MOT reject) and I have some of the parts but not all I think. I have two pics of what I have.

How does the cable attach to the adjuster and am I missing some parts that go to the cable end?

I know I'm missing the other adjuster and the two double coil springs are fubared.

None of the books I have has any info of how the cable goes and I've already searched this forum for couple of hours and all the cable questions always get no answers?

TIA

I have just what you are needing as reference pics at home. If noone posts I'll get them up here this eve. Basically a whole trailing arm assembly in vg condition w/ no rotor on so you can see how it all goes together

No wonder nobody answers when you keep the year and type a secret.

Don't think there is a manual for a smurfbus but there are all kinds of Repair Manuals for a Porsche with detailed instructions and pictures showing the brake assembly.

Hope you don't reinstall that rusty junk?

What is "fubared"?

F.U.B.A.R.- f'ed up beyond all reality (or repair, or reason) Fubar was used as G.I. short hand on repair tags and it just caught on for warfare in general. Like "that mission was fubar'ed"

You can look in the parts diagram on this site and see how the parts go together. Exploded Parts Diagrams are very helpful in re-assembling a basket of parts, like yours, and the part numbers right there!

Cool

Can think of much more interesting stuff I'd rather study.

Attaching just one side is not really going to work.

Good luck with the smurfbus.

Cable doesn't attach to the adjuster. You are missing one of the "expanders" and should really replace all the springs. Hopefully someone will post a PET breakdown, I have that assembly in one of my cars and IMO it really is NOT one of Porsche's better ideas. It will work if assemble correctly though. Take apart the adjuster (it's two pieces), clean and lubricate it so it spins freely. I would sandblast everything and toss heat paint on it to keep rust minimal..

Just woke up. BTW I'm ESL (english second language so sometimes it's hard to explain stuff). I tried to look for a diagram for this cable end but did not find one. The car is a 79 930 and has a hydraulic parking brake that leaks and is not aproved by MOT (understandable, as it should be the emergency brake if hydraulics fail)

I have 101, (rebuild book), The workshop maual PDF and the Andersson book but none show this cable connection so if you have time please did up these pics Michael. On page 46-14 on works shop manual (the one available at internet) there is one pic that shows a spreader lever and some other piece that I seem to be also missing?

But when I order these parts from abroad I need to have them all ordered at once as I only have 3 weeks to get ot sorted out.

TIA

That's a different E-Brake and easier to install I might add.... the one this guy has is like a puzzle.

Look at the hinged part marked with the yellow arrow. You need one on each side of the assembly with a spring in between them.

The cable goes through the hole in the hinged parts and when you adjust it expands the brake shoes outward.

I remember that breakdown and I went nuts trying to assemble it using that. They show only one of those floppy pivot arms (#31) when in reality you need two with the spring separating them.. horrible setup IMO.

Yep, those diagrams just don't do it for me. Very nice pics and very help full, thank you John.

I just ordered a full rear parking brake drum rebuild kit from UK which should be in my hands in less than two weeks. now I need to check the front if it's missing anything.

Huh, the workshop manual looks totally different than your pics but my spares indicate that I have the same setup as you have. The manual is for 78 930 which should be the same as 79?

DOH, I just got the rebuild kit and it does not have the expanders like in Johns pics (the ones I need) but I received the ones like in the workshop manual pic I posted!

Can they be used in the place of my originals? I ordered a kit for 930 (HandBrake Shoes Spring Kit. Porsche 930 1975-89, Porsche | Design 911) and the part # on these different expanders is 99335207300

I think what's missing from that diagram is the "third hand" required to get the castle nut onto the end of the cable. When reassembling without having replaced the cable, do you need to disconnect downstream to get the cable easily into the hole far enough to get the nut on? It'd be easy with three hands but....

I got this sorted out with a BMW E28 525 rebuild kit. I had to drill new holes for the spring but at the end it works fine. What a pita job to sort out the missing parts.
