My '74 coupe has a stock '75 CIS engine. On a fairly long trip using several tanks of gas I averaged 30.2 MPG at a constant 3000 RPM cruising speed.

Ordinarily, running around locally, I don't get anywhere near that much mileage, but then I don't cruise at 3000 RPM either.

I got an honest 26 mpg mostly highway a couple of years ago on a regular basis. I normally avoid the highway but I was travelling for work.

Current mixed back road driving is 23 mpg, but I've been a good boy compared to other years. Went from 15's 50 series summer tires to all-season 60 series, just not as much fun in the twisties anymore.:(

I once got 32 mpg in my 87, but that was downhill coming out of the Rockies. I get about 27 on the highway if I can manage to keep it below 90 mph (not easy!!!)

ipacketeer 06-27-2011 03:51 PM

Northern NJ to Eastern NC about 590 miles, I averaged 27 mpg.

gtihop 06-27-2011 04:44 PM

I average about 19 mpg (4.5 liters)

Wow,

I try and keep pretty close tabs on the Targa, never worried to much about city mpg.....but I do watch the highway mpg just for fun. Pretty consistent on the highway, 75-90, cruising,

3 trips of around 250-300 miles....over 27mpg.

No chip, no mods, and usually no top.....:>)

I have a 1980 SC and commute 20 miles each way for work....70% highway @60mph.

I keep my tires at 36psi in the rear and 34psi up front.

I average 23.5 every tank.

I also installed a heated O2 sensor, and manually adjust the control fuel pressure as it warms up.

My 73.5 T CIS gets 28 mpg, loaded up with three people, luggage, going about 70-75.
It gets 24 mpg in my daily commute of 50 mph over the canyon and along PCH, with 10-15 minutes of stop and go.

agrimmitt 06-27-2011 09:51 PM

I can normally count on about 21-22 around town and maybe 27 on the open road/freeway in my 83sc 3.0; (190,000 on it) if I run around 3000-3200 rpm's @ about 72. Better with my 17" rims, less with my 16"; I run 34/36 on the 17" and 32/34 on the 16". But over the long run, it just seems to run up to 4000-6000 rpms all by it self on those country roads!
Enjoy every drop!!!!!

IMHO at "normal" cruising hiway speeds, say 60-70 mph, it is not possible to get 34 mpg in a 911.At that pace in my 85 3.2 Euro , I usually get about 24-27 (US, not Imperial). The speedo and odometer, oddly enough, are bang on. In my experience lots of full throttle action or higher cruising speeds will reduce economy significantly. In a day of Autox, including the drive to and from the event, I will usually get 12-15 mpg. Cheers

81 SC Ray 06-28-2011 07:28 AM

WOW - my 81 SC must have a problem. She runs great and has the mixture adjusted using an exhaust gas analyzer - 15 in town and 21 on the highway. So, that is that. I will say this, I have been in stop and go traffic with the outside air temp at 95degrees F and had no overheating problems. So, maybe, even though I had the mixture adjusted by a reputable shop - maybe I am running rich.

mike635 06-28-2011 09:23 AM

Just took a little family trip in my '81 last weekend, all highway speeds (75-80 MPH), windows down, sunroof open (AC deleted!). I calculated 23 MPG which was a little worse than expected, but not bad. My car is completely stock with a good O2 sensor, mixture set by me using an oscilloscope to monitor the test port (set to 50% average duty cycle). In town I probably average 16-17 MPG.

Isn't that a little higher (4lbs?) than what the owner's manual suggest?

Is the steering a little jumpy at those pressures?

Naw, you just have a lead foot.:D

Averaged 30 - 31 back and forth from Michigan to VA with the SC. Made the trip several times before SC metamorphosed into track car.

Current '99 996 w/3.6 gets ~ 26 - 28 on intersate trips.

It is higher than the manual, but it serves me well. The majority of my driving is commuting on the highway, and the higher pressure nets me about 1.5mpg. I don't notice it being jumpy at all, but our roads are HORRID. I do over-steer easier when I frolic out of the parking lot.
When I plan on doing a lot of back road driving I bring the pressure down.

village idiot 06-29-2011 07:00 PM

I average around 27mpg. Better than my 88 Civic that has a bad converter lock-up solenoid.

don gilbert 06-29-2011 07:20 PM

before i went to an adj. control pres. reg, my 75 with 3.0sc engine averaged around 24 on the hwy. when i went to the elec. wur., i could dail control press. up to 60lb on the hwy (15/1 afr) and now get 28-31 mpg on a reg. basis. to low control press (45-50) really effects mileage, but you wont really have any drivabilty probs, just not as good of mpg. get press. up to spec(55) and mileage will improve dramatically, as will performance.

racer_X 06-29-2011 07:45 PM

I get around 25 mpg on the hwy with my all stock '77 2.7 doing averaging 70-75mph.

zorin 09-15-2011 11:35 AM

I get about 12 mpg on my carburated 3.2L , city driving. I guess that's expected for running on carburator ?
