Mechanical Speedo quit working and gearbox leaking oil Coincidence?l

I haven't had a chance to crawl under the car yet.

A couple weeks ago the speedo quit working. (1974 w/ mechanical speedo) and now the gearbox is dripping oil.

What should I look for on both to get this fixed?

THanks Pelicans!

JZ

lane, Do you think the two are related? ( the leak and the lack of a working speedo)

it was with my car, you can replace the right angle piece that comes out of the trans without pulling the trans. suport the nose of the trans with something and drop the front trans suport, have the replacement one ready because it will blead when you pull the bad one out.

No angle drive on a '74 (915) trans (unless it's a Sportomatic). It's possible that somehow the cable came loose/broke at the nose of the trans, and the speedo drive seal has failed and is now leaking onto the ground, instead of into the cable.

Re the leak, the seal on the drive may be bad. Easy, but messy, to replace the seal, as when you pull the drive from the transmission housing, a great deal of the trans lube will escape. So have a large pan ready, as well as a new seal and some new lube. And yeah, it may be that the cable has broken. But you won't know until you get under there, unscrew the cable-housing retainer and look.

Old thread I know.... I suspect my '74 915 has a broken speed drive as well. I checked the cable and it is fine. Also ruled out the speedometer itself. The '74 915 does not have a right angle speedo drive that is easily removable. I'm wondering if it can be replaced with the trans in the car?

TIA, Chris

My trans leak turned out to be the main seal leaking...

The speedo cable snapped about one inch behind the speedo. ...was just a coincidence. Oddly the Dam-n thing just broke again in about the same place. I think it only lasted about 6 weeks. I'm not sure if the speedo has an intermittent problem causing the cable failure or if there was a kink or something in the cable.

I don't know if you can fix the drive while in the car but I'd bet it is too tight to do so. ...maybe if you drop the cross member and support the trans some other way you might have some room to work.

Good Luck.

I had the same problem on another car where I went through a couple speedo cables in a short period of time. Coincidentally, I had started rotating my speedometer for a "cooler" look. I guess this put a kink in the cable that it did not like. Once I moved the speedo back to the correct position, everything was fine.

...I was kind of thinking this might have been the problem for me too. I had rotated the speedo so that I could see the 90-120 range (track use) which is blocked by the momo wheel if I don't. I really don't need to see the speedo so I'll just rotate it back to standard this time around.

Thanks!
