Castrol VR1 Question

Bought some Castrol VR1 racing oil SAE 50. Got home and realized it's not the VR1 racing oil 20W 50 I already have on the shelf.

What's the difference?

Thanks.

Valvoline makes VR-1

Castrol makes GTX. You do not want GTX.

Use something like Bradd Penn which is recommended in the ultimate oil thread. Do a search for that.

What's wrong with Castrol GTX? The car I drive has used Castrol GTX exclusively for 274k miles and it has never been cracked open and runs like new. Castrol GTX and Kendall are the same oil. Brad Penn is the old Kendall green oil.

Castrol GTX breaks down too soon- gets thin. The detergents are quite aggressive and can interfere with ZDDP formation despite the high mileage formulation having good levels of Zinc and Phosphorous.

I have never heard that Castrol GTX and the new Kendall are the same oil. Please cite your sources.

I been using Castrol GTX 20/50 for 23 years and never had any problems. I do realize that there will always be new and improved enhanced products.

The Castrol you used 23 years ago was better than the newer Castrol formulations which have been regulated to save catalytic converters in engines with roller cam followers.

Sorry, sorry. I meant Valvoline VR1.

Just want to know how different 20w-50 is from SAE 50.

Flieger 07-02-2011 10:57 AM

I think SAE 50 is straight 50 weight no matter the temperature. 20W50 will change viscosity with temperature so cold starts will not be so hard on seals due to thick oil and high pressure. The downside is that the viscosity modifiers that allow that are not as durable so the oil will get thin and need changing more quickly. This is part of Castrol GTX's problem.

If you are racing this engine or live in a warm climate you might be able to get away with straight 50 weight if you are careful on cold starts. It will hold up to high temperatures better and will have lots of nice Zinc and Phosphorous that catalytic converters would choke on.

Nossir,..totally different companies.

Castrol is made by Burmah Castrol PLC in the UK.

Kendall is made by Conoco-Phillips in TX.

You are fortunate to have good luck using GTX and I think that may be bigger testament to your maintenance regimen. My long-term experience with Castrol's US products isn't the same and we do not recommend the use of GTX in any vehicle.
