Where are all these 3.2s coming from?
Updating your SC or older 911 by swapping the original motor for a 3.2 seems to be a very popular and successful modification to our cars. I did it, and I am very happy with the results. But I wonder, what happened to all those Carreras that gave up their engines for our conversions? Did they Crash, or Rust out? Or is there a fleet of engine-less Carerras hidden away around the country? Hmmm...

Because people are still driving them they are still wrecking them.
3.2s can also be rebuilt so they have a second life. And finally, the population of Porsche owners that hang out on these boards and do hotrod engine swaps on their cars is a very small percentage of the Porsche population even if they are very publicly documented.

Some will be 3.0's that are rebuilt to 3.2's. These motors are what are referred to as 3.2 SS, or short stroke.
Something to keep in mind, when going to a motor with a higher displacement is that the motors that are for sale can be "tired" motors. |

I bought a very clean, low-mileage 1987 Targa from an insurance auction after it got crunched hard in the nose.
The engine and a bunch of other bits went into the 1973, and the rest of that car was disposed of here at Pelican and John Walker's swap meet. |

My 3.2 came from a crashed SC in southern Calif. Same for the one I tried to buy the month before........The real question is: Where does Motormeister get all those 3.2's they have on Ebay continually?

As you may know, there is a secret factory near Taos, New Mexico that is still turning out late 1950s Chevy sedans and early 1960 Chevy pick ups. I suspect they have switched over to building 3.2 motors for the Porsche.

I don't know if the rules are still the same in Germany...but back in the '70's they were not allowed to use "used parts" for any road cars.
As a result..when stationed over there...we visited a wrecking yard (not called that) and purchased a bunch of engines and trans axles....crated them up and flew them back to Canada (good old service air...LOL)and ended up selling them for a very nice profit over here. Because the engines were available...they were only going to be crushed....so saving them was a double goody. Any one know if this is still the rule? Bob
