In the pic there is a rectangle piece of wood. is this normal?? Also there is something unplugged see the arrows. what is that? Also, I am thinking of taking out that big plastic spare wheel thing to paint it and clean it all up. I think it's fiberglas? any one know? lastly what is that long skinny wire that runs along the passenger side, you can see it in the wheel well?

Okay,
The wood is not normal and is, in fact, covering the opening to the smugglers box where your steering linkage is and maybe even an A/C blower. Looks like it was added there to mount some audio hardware or something. The devices and wires you have shown also don't look factory. The green arrow items look like they may have gone to an electrical device (amp?), but I don't believe they are factory as I've never seen thing mounted to the clamshell before. Don't know what you mean by the "big plastic spare wheel thing". Do you mean the inflatable spare? The red object on the passenger side by the red wire looks to be an air horn pump, maybe. It's also not factory.

you have an aftermarket alarm siren on the passenger side. Looks like your PO had an alarm system and audio system installed.

Ok, so that black thing by the top left corner of the wood can go. (that's the alarm siren right?) and that plug is aftermarket? Ok. Car has no amp. anymore. I'll get out there tomorrow and clean it up more

the big round thing you are talking about is the gas tank. It has an indentation for the spare. You can remove and paint it, but unless you have a pressing need to do this (or the tank needs to be refurbished) I'd leave it alone.
Remove the wood for sure.

Oh, and our host sells hood shocks, that's an easy DIY job (one on each side), I'd replace with new. The stick is cheaper, of course, but it's easy to knock it out and get the head slam thing happening by accident. If you don't want to do the hood shocks, there are some other solutions, do a search.

My hood shocks actually work. But don't hold the hood all the way up, comes down a bit. I can't believe that the furl tank. Sheesh, 3 years+ and I've learned more tonight than the last year! Yeah, I'll leave the tank alone. Get rid of the wood, maybe eliminate the wires. Just get it all wiped down

The connector looks very similar to the one on my Clifford alarm.

FinallyGotOne, buy Wayne's book "101 Projects" thru Pelican and browse through it when you get snowed in this winter and you will learn all about what makes the car tick and will probably save you a fortune in service and repairs. Good luck and if you do not have to, leave the tank alone. Not a tough job but a PIA. Steve

+1 on steve911T's suggestion on "101 Projects" book. If your hood shocks worked PROPERLY they'd keep the hood up with no drooping. Be mindful when removing/disabling your alarm - Cliffords were wickedly smart & if you remove part of it, the remaining part may keep the motor from running kind of thing. I'd guess the long skinny wire in the spare tire well goes to the battery, probably was a "hot" wire (could be a ground??) to power the amp that used to sit on that piece of wood screwed to the smugglers box or perhaps something to the alarm??? On my car, the big plastic spare wheel thing is hard foam and I'd suggest trying your paint on a small part first to insure there are no incompatibly issues. While you're in there, I'd strongly encourage the removal of the battery & do a really thorough clean-up of any battery acid related stuff & put a proper coat of paint where needed. Have fun! Steve |
