I'm trying to understand how the switch works, specifically the passenger side. I think I have deciphered the following diagram with the exception of the switch. It appears that the switch completes the ground on one side and that both sides are + when the switch is neutral (middle). Is this correct?

You are correct, Sir.
The sw is looking for a grd. One side rocks LT to find grd. The other rocks RT to find grd. ------------------ Derk Pitt 88 Carrera Coupe |

Thank you Derk. When I first started testing the circuit I was a bit confused as to why each spade tested "on" with a multimeter.

Not exactly!
All three switches are of a type that have continuity from the swinging contacts at terminals #1 and #2 to #3 and #5 in the center or neutral position. Let's just call that the 'pass through mode' and in the case of the driver's side switch for the passenger door, it passes along +12 Volts because of the jumper wires on terminals #3 and #5. The actual switch contacts are of the type 'Break-Before-Make' and only one set is operated at a time, pushing the rocker UP operates the 'swinging contact terminal #2, breaking contact with terminal #5, then making contact with terminal #4 and ground. Pushing the rocker down operates contact #1, breaking contact with terminal #3, and making contact with terminal #4 and ground. Whenever a rocker is operated the polarity presented to the motor at terminals #1 and #2 is reversed in the rocker down position with respect to rocker up. When the passenger door switch in the neutral position, it passes along to the motor whichever polarity selected by the driver's side switch. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Thanks Warren, the good news is that I now thoroughly understand how the switches work. The bad news is they all test fine, so now I suspect a bad motor and that does not look like an easy replacement!
Anyone know of a tech article for removing the motor? [This message has been edited by robfix (edited 07-18-2001).] [This message has been edited by robfix (edited 07-18-2001).] |
