My '66 Coupe, and it's progression

Gents,

I've been frequenting this site for some time now, and I really haven't taken the time to document my projects. Specifically, my '66 911 hot rod.

My plan for this car was to build a reliable, daily drivable hot rod. I was not looking to build an original car.

Here is where I ended up.

Then, some investment opportunities came up, and I realized I had built something with some value. It was not absolutely crucial that I sell, especially if it meant taking a considerable loss (one that would not outweigh the investment opportunity).

I posted a "what is my car worth" thread on the boards, and had very mixed responses.
I listed the car for sale. The market was flakey, and in perfect honesty, the car I had built was not for everyone and here is why.

Common throughout the purists was the need to return the chrome trim to the car. Since then, I have been working on replacing this trim.

The 911 SC seats installed in the car were said to be too new looking, and that I needed older style seats. This is what I have come up with.

In addition, people have said the current motor, 2.4 73.5 911 T motor was not fitting for a hot rod type. Because of this, I have sourced a 2.7 911S motor.

I will be updating this thread as the work goes on. Due to an insane schedule, it probably won't be as frequent as I'd like, but this thread will serve as motivation to spend more time in the garage!

To all that have supplied input on this car. Thank you.

i like the looks. hell i'd even pc the grille/trim around the lights and go all out black. that is one attractive car. (pc is easy to remove as well with gasket remover soaking overnight).

For what it's worth, it seems to me you are building this car for a potential buyer, not yourself. Do what you like and don't worry about all the rest. If it makes you feel good, then you have found success and happiness.

I actually thought this car was sold on Ebay. Last I saw, there was one bid with no reserve.

You posted in your for sale thread "Gents, the first bid is in...the car will sell....still way lower than what it is worth though!"

I kept getting flakes for bidders on eBay...it was a very frustrating process.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Honestly, the more time I spend on the boards here, the more I tend to agree with the purists. Magnus Walker has some absolute killer cars, and I really dig the chrome on those.

i like the look without the chrome trim, and am also considering building almost the same car-
this is a 66 roller that i have for a base. I am thinking of ditching the 912 motor and getting a 2.7/915 set up for it. 912 motors are getting rare and it is almost a straight trade money wise-

Probably not what you want to read but I'd keep that 912 motor.

I believe that there will a day where 912's a worth reasonable money as so many have been destroyed... I would always go for originality or make improvements that can be easily brought back to originality.

Having owned and enjoyed a good 912 for 43 years (OK, to make it easy, that's since 1968), it's been interesting to see how the appreciation of them--not in a financial way but in an intrinsic way--has changed. They used to be a dime-a-dozen, but now just try to find a nice one that no one has irrevocably cobbled up. Even recently, few owners spent the time and bucks to look after them, so more were lost than early 911s, but today that's changing. Bang for the buck, a 912 is a sensational value.

My car has gone through various trends and then come back again. Yes, I blacked out the chrome in the 1980s, but now it's more normal, still with 7" alloys, S brakes, sport seats, bigger torsion bars, and better headlights. Nothing irreversible, that's the key.

I've decided to stay with the 901 trans. Mine has been built with airport gears, so it accelerates very very quick even with the 2.4. I cannot even imagine what it is going to be like with the 2.7.

So I have sourced a complete 77s with solid compression. First on the agenda is clean it up and replace seals. Pics to come!

At the risk of offending the purists, I really don't like shiny trim on a 911 of any year. I know that's how they came for a long time, but I've never liked it. I only tolerate it because, well, that's how they were built.

I much prefer this very clean subdued look.

As far as the seats go, you've chosen nice ones. I really love the early S seats and think that would have been stunning in this car, maybe with a houndstooth insert. I have to agree that the 2.4T engine (did you leave the CIS on that) was not the best choice. As far as the 2.7 goes, I hope you're warming it up a little bit and putting carbs on it. A stock 2.7 with CIS will neither be aesthetically appropriate for the car nor will it make up for the lack of aesthetics by being overwhelming powerful. For a hot-rod, if the engine is much newer in appearance, you can get away with it if it makes crazy power. Otherwise, don't bother.

I think this is a GREAT looking car. Glad you didn't sell it.
