^^^^ A 5 speed 901 is no big deal. They are selling the cooling system in that link. 6 speed in the 901/911 box would be more interesting. 1st gear is already cantilevered in the nose piece, not much space left for gears.

Imagine what the cost of servicing and upkeeping woud be........

The early 6 speed rumour was something that was being done on behalf of Francis Tuthill. The project was abandoned and in the end they settled for a 5spd dog box. This was in a 915. A dog box for the 915 is nothing new. We've had one available for the better part of a decade.
Though to be perfectly honest I have been toying with the idea of a sequential gearbox inside of the 915 case. It's totally feasible. It takes a completely clean sheet of paper and new way of thinking to make it happen. I think I could bring it to market for under $20K. It's just going to have to wait a bit. Right now we're in the process of finalizing designs and getting ready to prototype a proprietary sequential gearbox for the GT3 gearbox. Here's some discussion of it on another board: gearbox conversion to sequential - 6speedonline.com Forums The box we're currently doing is going to make Holinger's sequential used in the Cup Cars look downright archaic. And just as point of clarity, no you cannot get a Cup Car Holinger sequential gearbox for $30k. That's about the price of rebuilding one. The shifter alone is a $7k part. I think buying a gearbox from PMNA without a core exchange is closer to $45k. Figure installing a Cup Car gearbox into any variant of 911 is going to cost you around $75k parts and labor. I understand that Tuthill has done a 5-speed dog box now in a 901. They suggest that the 6 speed 901 box is next off the rank?

Sorry guys, I lost track of this thread. My mechanic installed in one of his clients race cars. The owner missed a gear a couple of times and spun a bearing each time - ouch.
If you have any questions let me know and I'll ask my mechanic. He knows his stuff. |

I've been planning a Hewland JFR6 or FTR (Star Mazda) conversion. Plan on designing the bell housing over the winter, then its just a question of finding or having a R&P made. Should be an under 10K option with plenty of cheap parts to go around...
Anyone know if its been tried? |
