sequential shifters for 911's

I was at my mechanic on Friday. He was showing me a sequential shifter for his Porsche race cars. Very cool stuff. If anyone is interested I'll take some pics

Can you tell me what type of box they are using?

Some details on the box would be interesting.

The new cup cars come with sequential boxes. ~30K per box.

I know about the new cup boxes, I was hoping there might be another solution. $30K retrofit is a bit pricy! I keep getting tempted though, reason however stops me

at 30k you could swap in a hopped up superbike engine and have a sequantial gearbox more power and sound like an f1 car haha

Hey, good idea. I would rather have a turbo Subie flat 4 than a Hyabusa engine, though.

Apparently the servo has to be extremely precise due to the small inputs required for Porsche gearboxes. Good fun though. Love the gizmos!

At a car show in May I saw a 997 GT3RS with a sequential shifter, but not a sequential gearbox. Apparently there is someway to do this without changing the box itself. To be honest, I didn't get it.

oh man this is awesome, ive always wondered about swaps like this, or with a dogbox, but i always thought that it wouldnt really work with the rear engine.

THanks for posting those pictures.

I might have missed it, but did anyone say what type of gearbox this is? Looks like one off a bike, but what type? Would any one off a bike work?
THnaks
Scott

Look up Jim Copp here on the Board... I do believe he has tried this set up on one of his older model monster race cars... Pricey is an understatement though...

This system retails for 3200 euros, so not that expensive for sequential shifting. As far as I know this mounts to the regular gearbox, no need to change the internals.
I doubt it works as well as a real sequential shifter, and have no idea about the shift times, but it's a nice option if that's your cup of tea.

Jim was/is running a Holinger gearbox with his 4.2L monster if I recall correctly, not the computer/electronic controlled gear shifter that translates a sequential shifter at the stick to the regular H-pattern back at the transmission that I think is being talked about here. I haven't heard of one that incorporates the clutch as well. Cartronic makes this kit for the GT3 street cars and I see no reason why one could not rig up a similar system for an early car but the benefit without an automated clutch and ability to have no lift up-shifts seems questionable.

IMO That's stupid... Sequential shifting on an H-Pattern box, give me a break! Get a cup car, and you have a real sequential shifter!

interesting...though on a more mundane level which US Porsche shop is trying to squeeze six speeds into a 901 box. Came across it earlier this year.???

Patrick Motorsports do a short bell housing gearbox which will / can be retrofitted. I got one of there 6 speed G50/52 boxes, with a short bell housing for my 1978 turbo body car...

you can see the box at Patrick Motorsports - Transmission > Porsche G50 Short Bell Housing

I understand that they do a 5 speed for the 901. see Patrick Motorsports - Transmission > Porsche 901 5-Speed

I really wanted to do a sequential box, but they aren't really that practical for street use. That said if they were reasonably priced I probably would have just for the sake of having one... but at 30K plus fitment and modification it would end up being a 40K job.
