CAT/PRE-MUFF Thermal Wrap, Anyone???

I want to reduce the heat emitting from my pre-muffler.

Has anyone did this? Pics & Hints please

Is there a neg side effect in thermal wrapping?

oe of the negative, from old time was water trap in the wrap and rust the component (header and such). Now it's all ss, I am not sure if it's still applied.

I wrapped, so far no issues but looks like rust is forming under, I wanted to keep heat off the engine, tire and shock.

Best to use a heat shield....wrap will suck up oil and water.....you may have s/s tubing but are your nuts and bolts?

the heat from a premuffler is insignificant. I wouldn't bother with any kind of wrap, it won't do any good for anything.

another good option would be two have it thermal coated.

On my previous wrx i put a more smoothed out transition pipe (crosspipe) between my two exhaust manifolds that seemed to help quite a bit but, removing the factory crosspipe left me with no protection from and to avoid the heat soak i opted to have the new pipe thermal coated. now that i think about it would us non-header guys with heat exchangers and the crosspipe from left to right banks see any performance gains with a new crosspipe? sorry for the hi-jack.

What if I just wrap the main body and avoid any non SS components? Better than nothing right?

I agree. If you've replaced the cat with with a premuffler, you've already gotten by far the biggest bang for your buck re heat reduction on that side.

Not sure I agree with this. The stock cat setup has a very well designed heat shield that is installed with it. With a test pipe (no shield) the distance from the pipe to the shock and tire are about 2" or less, if I remember correctly, get that pipe red hot and then stop e.g. at a stop light and you have some very hot surfaces near these items. I have no temp. measurements but that's why I put wrap on.

The 911 has no real heat shield on the cat. The SC has no heat shield at all, and the Carreras only had a heat shield that faced straight downward, only designed to stop the car from catching on fire is someone parked it on tall, dry grass. That heat shield does nothing to shield heat from any components on the car.

If your car is getting a test pipe "red hot" then you have a serious tuning issue.

It's a nonexistent problem. SCs and Carreras have been running around safely for 22-34 years now without any heat related problems from the cats (certainly, your shock absorber and tire do not need to be shielded from the cat), and with the original poster's test pipe, it will run significantly more cool than the cat.

please give me a few days to provide a picture of the cat heat shield found on my 89, in the absence of measurements or other data I propose we agree on a dead lock consisting of conflicting anecdotal info.
