I decided not to document me scraping old sticker adhesive or wiggling the tires to see if I have any loose bearings....;)

I am waiting for a new Pertronix II ignitor and trying to decide if I am going to install the later model RS door panels you lent me or just bite the bullet and get the early style RS door panels in vinyl from AppBiz/Pelican (which is what I want).

Combatic,

I was searching for seam sealer and ran across your posts. I am in the process of fixing my 71 911T and have a leaky acid battery issue. The acid ate away a portion of the gas tank lateral support. I noticed on your 1st picture on this thread that you replaced the front foot or so of the support. Where did you aquire the support, or did you fabricate?

Hopefully you will get this message. If so, what seam sealer are you using?

Thanks

Bob

Any updates?

Also, you don't happen to work in Bellevue do you?

Day 1010 | Behr Oil Cooler Removal + Suspension/Brake Upgrades
3/10/2014

Project 1 | 2.7 Behr Oil Cooler Removal
After driving the car for a couple of years and putting up with the oil flavored heat coming off of the SSI’s, I have decided to try and tackle what I believe to be the main offender, the behr oil cooler on my 1977 2.7L in my 1969T.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-t...210147_999.jpg

I was told that you CAN remove the oil cooler without a motor drop and I am happy to say that in a couple of hours I was able to remove it with minimal trouble. The heater will come out the side with the wheel removed and by dropping and tilting the motor down slightly.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-L...225355_430.jpg

Project Prep. Get the car up in the air, drain oil & remove right rear wheel. Prepare catches and rags for oil dripping everywhere, crank the tunes, open PBR & dig out your 10mm, 14mm & 19mm sockets, various extensions, and drop lights.

Step 1a | undo oil feed & supply hoses from the oil tank, rotate them down and drain remaining oil from the oil cooler then remove hoses.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-f...210241_863.jpg

Step 1b | remove duct from the top of the cooler
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5...200937_864.jpg
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-e...200753_340.jpg

Step 2 | Remove tins blocking AND bolted to oil cooler. Before removing the tin, remove SSI heater intake hose passing through tin FIRST (I couldn’t get to one of the 10mm tin bolts b/c it was blocked by an oil line so removing the hose makes the tray tin removal possible).

Step 3 | Unbolt hard oil return line from oil cooler and tie back so that the bracket clears the cooler (I used the shock. Remember this is for a mid year 2.7 so ymmv)

Step 4 | Unbolt the 4 nuts holding the cooler on. (You will need long extensions to clear the SSI’s) for this one.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-E...210211_711.jpg

Step 5 | Partially drop the motor. This allows the cooler to slide out the side clearing the SSI’s and the car body. (make sure you support the motor! I don’t want anyone accidentally dropping a motor!!)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...223006_552.jpg

Step 6 | Remove oil cooler & seals. Replace with your clean, pressure tested replacement cooler.

...now I just have to find a cooler and seals ;)

Day 1010 | Behr Oil Cooler Removal + Suspension/Brake Upgrades (cont.)
3/10/2014

Project List
1. Upgrade stock front M brakes and solid rotors
2. Upgrade front Boge Struts
3. Replace front and rear suspension bushings
4. Add swaybars

Goals- The car has been developed from day one of restoration to be a sports purpose touring & track weapon. This means reasonable weight reduction (reasonable to me is avoiding the slippery uber dollar slope to shave ounces), aggressive suspension (currently running 22/28 T-bars) but with enough compliance to handle uneven surfaces and terrain encountered up in the mountains. Brakes should work cold but never encounter fade during aggressive driving during touring or DE days.

Phase 1 | Front Struts & Brakes

Stock OEM setup still on the car
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7...224426_998.jpg

Parts acquired & ready for restoration. Wide A Carrera Brakes & 24mm vented rotors (used from 84-89) and Boge Struts with Koni Inserts & 3.5” brake mount spacing (This is important b/c the stock Boges on the car only have 3” spacing and limits brake options to the stock ‘M’ Ate’s & pad sizes and I think rotor types. In my case I am opting for the wide A Carrera brakes and rotors that will still fit under my 15” deep 6 Fuchs)

Resto Begins

When I upgraded my '69T to 3.5" struts I also had to change the bottom ball joint & securing tapered pin to the slightly later '72 - '89 style.
Our hosts list them & have a helpful tech article although I suspect with your abilities you might not need to read that ;)

combatic 03-11-2014 03:44 AM

Martin, thanks for the heads up! The ball joints were not on my radar and need to be added to my parts list! The pelican articles are always a good read. Cheers!

cnielsen 03-11-2014 07:15 AM

Bryan, I have several recently refurbished oil coolers if you want one to exchange while you are getting yours cleaned.

Flojo 03-11-2014 08:11 AM

Flo, thank you for sharing the technical bulletin. As usual the help here on Pelican has been exceptional! Danke schön!

Flojo 03-11-2014 02:44 PM

Well, I got that help myself from here a couple of days ago. So I pass it on ;-)
Pelikan rulez!

PS... whats that lovely vintage blue color called?
if it was a benz, I'd guess it to be "chinablue" (China-Blau).

PPS... an waht a great work on your car!
i envy your garage and new lift!

Flojo 04-24-2014 12:20 AM

any update?

Sanderskog 07-21-2015 10:18 AM

Anything new? I keep coming back to check on the car.

I know it's highly unlikely but if you ever part ways with it please contact me first. I'd love to get it back in the family if you decide so.

Great work!

Sanderskog 12-26-2017 06:29 PM

Been a long time. Hoping for an update.

Sanderskog 03-12-2019 07:50 PM

Does anyone know what's happened to Papa Smurf? Haven't seen an update in years. If combatic ever lets it go I'd love the first chance to get it back in the family.

cnielsen 03-12-2019 08:04 PM

Not sure if Bryan is on Pelican much anymore. He is still driving “Papa Smurf” often and thoroughly enjoying the car.

RIP Marc

Thank you. I'd love to get in contact with Bryan. If he ever decides to part with Papa Smurf I'd love to get the chance to get it back in the garage.

Ultimately I had to choose between the car and my brothers boys but it kills me I had to let the car go (it's a long story).

If anyone has Bryan's contact information please let me know via PM. I'd like to just be in line if he lets it go.

Todd

This is another incredible build since I've joined this forum. I'm getting very motivated to start posting my build.
