Anyone else prefer the stock wheel over a Momo?
PO put a Momo Competition on my 930. Thankfully, I easily swapped back to the original (thanks to all the tips on the board about how to do this atraumatically, it was rather simple.) After driving it quite a bit initially with the Momo, I must say I MUCH prefer the stock wheel. Firstly, I have small hands (no jokes please, I'm a microsurgeon and it comes in handy, trust me) and the Momo is just too thick for me. Secondly, I find for street driving the car feels much more precise with the stock wheel and I can maneuver it much more easily (larger diameter helps with no power assist). Thirdly, I can see the gauges in there entirety.

I agree!
I always run the stock wheel in my 911s. I've bought some that had Momos, etc. in them, but I always switch them out. The 911 wheel diameter is designed with the non-power steering in mind. The stock diameter gives perfect steering feel and effort, imo. And, like you say, the gauges aren't blocked and the stock wheel looks just right in an 80s 911. |

I also prefer the stock wheel to the smaller diameter aftermarket wheels.

I enjoyed my stock wheel before replacing it (due to severe wear) for all the aforementioned reasons with the Momo Retro, but the Retro wheel:
1) has a larger 360mm diameter than the popular 350mm Prototipo, though not as large as the 380mm+ stock wheel. This minimizes the extra torque needed to turn the wheel while parked to app. 5%. It also minimizes the blockage to speedo 2) is metal 3-spoke which feels less "bulky" 3) has virtually the same thickness from what I remember as the stock 4) looks better IMO, esp in MY interior (compared to the grey worn stock wheel But to each his own.. -P911

Stock on the stock M491.
Fat Momo for the track on the beast.

I have only had a momo, and have no desire to switch it out. Reminds me of their race cars...

Stock for me. Besides the advantages of leverage and an unencumbered view of the gauges, the stock Porsche steering wheel just looks right on these cars.

I wouldn't say I dislike my monte carlo, but the worn stock wheel had a much more comfotable feel.

Prefer stock for all the reasons mentioned. Also no unattractive 'accordion' adapter.

Stock wheel, all the way. I had a Monte Carlo for a while, but switched back to the stock wheel and it looks and feels WAY better. I love the design of the Prototipo but even that looks wrong in these cars.

I've got a Carrera 3.o sports wheel on my '76 which I love; it does have a sightly thicker grip, but that suits me with my long-ish fingers. It's a damn sight better than the ugly aftermarket bling the PO had installed.
I also don't mind the airbag wheel in my '93, although it does seems a little less comfortable when I am having to pry my fingers off it after a spirited drive ![]()

I have to say I've always been happy with the four spoke Porsche wheel in my Carrera like the one you prefer. I have used the three spoke stock wheel but didn't like it as much. A buddies car has the wheel that came on the Turbo and although very comfortable while in motion, it seems to need quite a bit more effort to park and as noted by other posters, some of the gauges are obscured. Cheers

I like using my factory but un-attractive looking Porsche 3 spoke in the 84 Carrera.
However, I would like to find an original 360mm F.A. Porsche design - Momo 3 spoke. That wheel has a pure and raw look, suitable to that era, plus you can see the guages. The factory wheel on your 930 is nice too. Very functional and clean look. Depending on ones comfort, the optional hub extension is a subtle improvement. It sort of has the character of the very early original 911 'bow-tie' wheel. |

Funny - when I go from my momo prototipo to driving a student's car with a stock wheel - I always feel like I am driving a bus - or a Uhaul truck... But to each their own.

I never liked the look of the four spoke starting when I built a model of a 3.2 in '80s. Now that I own one, I love the feel and the look has grown on me. While I am tempted to try out a Prototypo or Retro, I hate to fix something that's not broken. Maybe somebody will let me try driving their Momo equipped car. Hint, hint.

You mentioned the accordion thing and I looked and still have it behind my stock wheel. Should I have removed it with the Momo? Is this the raised hub option?

Momo in the race car, and I put a matching Momo in the 911. Like JeremyD, I do some instructing, and don't like driving cars with stock wheels.

I prefer the looks of my Prototypo but sure do like the diameter of the stock wheel. Takes less steering effort with the larger diameter of the stock wheel.
