what do they mean by prototype? - looks like a bog standard 928 to me, if it is an 81 it would probably be an S - 4.7 motor instead of a 4.5
worth in US...... maybe 3 to 4k if everything works - can be expensive

Unfortunately, repairs on these cars can exceed the purchase price/market value asap. Personally, I wouldn't buy a 928 unless you really, really, really want to own a 928 and nothing else will do...

The 928 cars are wonderful, very fast , very pretty junkyard cars. They are just not worth it to buy. Years ago, one of San Diego's best Porsche mechanics told me to stay away from the 928. Too hard to work on and just way to expensive to fix. I really do love them even though my Wife told me once that they looked like a stepped on Pacer!!!! Now that hurt!!!! Nick

PROTOTYPE?

In 1981?

They were produced and sold from 77-95. That's the fifth year!

How can it be a Prototype?

Gotta love CL....

Condition translation:

Mint = Driver quality
Excellent = Needs paint
Good = Sitting in field with weeds growing through the rust holes
Project = Box of crap that may not go with the rust infested hunk of steel I bought years ago and now the wife it threatening to divorce me if I don't pimp it on CL....

BTW, the only prototypes I know about on the 928 were in '77

This is not unique to the 928. The same thing can and does happen easily with the 911 or 930. In either case, its best not to buy a "craiglist special" unless you are prepared with lots of $, time, or both.

A 911 body is worth more than a 928! What I am saying is a nice shape 3.2 Carrera can be worth $20,000. A really nice shape 928 can be worth $5000. I would rather spend $15,000 on a rebuild on the Carrera than the 928. The 928 is a terrific car. It was a super car. Just never loved by enough Porsche people.

Guys who work on the air cooled cars often hate the 928 because they require a different skill set.

A supercharged 928 on fat tires drives a lot like a Viper.

I still have a 32 valve model. It is a helluva track car. I drive it home with the AC on.

1987-95(96) models are actually getting really hard to find in nice shape, & when you do they command a premium. 5 speed(s) are awesome (and desirable) in this segment. The older pre 1986 incl. S models just don't seem to get the respect (in money terms). I used to have a couple variants, if I could find 5 speed GT, Clubsoprt or GTS heck even an S4 in decent shape & colours I would consider it, there's an incredible pull in all gears when you hammer down on one, plus many upgrades to make it outpace @ any speed a lot current so called muscle cars. Did you post on the 928 section? Keep looking I'd say, there's a bargain on a 928 S4 out there somewhere, yeah, you'll probably need to spend more $ to find a better one....pay now or alot later, more $$ to run and always alittle more effort in upkeep compared to an SC or 3.2, but did I mention "oh what a feel'n in a 5 speed"?

I've owned an 82 928 for 12 years now. Got it cheap in good condition. Did the timing belt and water pump by myself before I knew about the forums (maybe before they existed?) and it has always been a great car. No, it's not the fastest car on the road but it moves good for the age and I've bested a few cars that should have been faster and were definitely newer. Like all Porsche it was designed well and with regular maintenance they will not let you down. The market has never loved these cars because they were not 911s. But they are two different styles. The 928 is a true GT car. Remember, as far as value goes it is only worth what you are willing to pay for it. If someone wants to overpay for a rusted out shell and put more money in it than it's worth they either really love the car, a challenge, or have more money than brains. I don't feel sorry for people who try to flip cars and fail. They know that game, just like flipping homes, is risky business (movie ref.) All old Porsche (or any old cars) can be money pits if you are not careful. I didn't buy mine for their value. I bought them to drive. One could argue that for the price the 928 is a better value as far as amount paid vs. joy of ownership.

As far as the proto. I've seem them first hand in Stuttgart. This is just usual BS you will see on CL.

Then start shopping -> Willhoit Enterprises -- Used Porsche, Used Ferrari, Used Sports Cars.

Michael Willhoit has been selling GTS's for years and they are the finest examples on the planet, many of them 5-speeds.

I used to have an '86.5 928S 5-speed that had no issues whatsoever. It was an unbelievable car and I miss it very much. If I had a bigger garage and a bigger wallet, I would own a GTS in a New York second.

BTW, the level of support for the 928 over on Rennlist, as well as all of the DIY articles and support materials, rival anything that this board has to offer for 911 owners. And that speaks volumes. 928 enthusiasts are every bit as rabidly enthusiastic about their cars as we classic 911 owners are.

Yes, they are great cars. And if you find a good one with low miles you can drive it for many years. But they are just not worth the rebuild. It would be better to just buy a 2011 mustang GT with 412 HP rear wheel drive and a six speed. Even a new one would be cheaper to rebuild than a 928.

Really the same could be said about any Porsche more than 20 years old. Take an unloved '80's 911 and bring it up to even good driver standards and then compare your costs incurred to market price. Sames goes for 944, 924, 912, 968. I don't think many of us consider economics when we spend on our cars. If we did we would probably have sold them long ago and would be driving a Kia.

I love my 928 the most out of my 944, 1970 911, and 1984 928S. The twin cams won't interfere if the timing belt breaks. So you can drive the dump out of them and not worry about it. I like the Automatic too. The 4 speed auto is pretty awesome. Seeing as how I stomped a new Challenger R/T in my 928 by engaging the kickdown, I doubt a Mustang could hang with it. You have to realize the 928 is still a small light car compared to a trashy American meat wagon. 928s are expensive. I revived mine out of a junkyard, but what a state of the art car for its day. The early 80s S is my favorite and technically I would put the handling up against a 911 any day. The later S4s, GTs, and GTSs just didnt have the looks. Plus you put a K&N, and a few other things in a 928 you just improve an already super car. You can supercharge them for a real Vette chewer upper too. Devek got a 928 to over 200mph.

I emailed him...

He really doesn't know much about the car... guy that sold it to him said it was a PROTOTYPE. So he repeated it.
