Do you think this is a real IROC RSR?
I was at Beaverun in Western PA this morning. This weekends races are part of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix that runs next weekend on one of the few all public street courses left in the U.S. The street course is limited to older, small displacement cars, so they run a bunch of classes this weekend out at the track. Porsche is the marque for this year's festivities.
Anyhow, while cruising up I stumbled onto this car. Sorry, I didn't take more pictures. I only had my phone with me. The car is completely street legal - inspection sticker and license plate with registration. Assuming it's real, it's really rare and an interesting piece of Porsche lure. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1310837510.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1310837535.jpg |
That looks like the real deal. Note the wheel flare shapes front and rear.
I wish you had taken some pictures of the interior. :( |
That's great! Man, that takes me back. I was at the IROC race at Riverside and watched all those guys bang on each other through turns 7 and 7a. Great fun. How cool it would be to actually own one of those cars!

WOW.....!!!!!! and I mean WOW
|
There is a good chance it will be at next Saturday's car show in the city. I will take my camera in hopes of finding him and getting a few more shots.
|
Yes, it is the real deal. It is owned by the gentleman that owns Sewickley Porsche, Audi and BMW and he has owned the car for years. In fact, we saw it at the dealership over the July 4 weekend. Awesome car and nice guy.

Street driven with a 2.8 for quite a long time. Dunno if they ever sourced a 3 liter for it
one of the most original condition ones out there |
Yep. It was Rennsport reunion Daytona a couple of years ago.

I just spent my Saturday morning cleaning a 1974 RSR which will be in Pittsburgh next weekend. Sell everything you own and buy the car. :)
|
A friend of mine owned the yellow car. He sold it to a famous Porsche collecting comedian.
|
It's real. I spoke at length to the owner at the Shadyside car show 2 years ago. He's a great guy and more than willing to show it off. He saw me rubber necking to look at it, spoke with me for a while and then took me behind the ropes, opened the hood and even let me set in it. I was thrilled. My wife made fun of how I looked and acted like a little kid the entire time.

Is it for sale?
|
Greg I am building an IROC replica. If you can ta.ke some interior pics that would be great.

Did these cars get painted and have color changes in between the first and last race ? As I have noted , A.J. Foyt in the Aubergine car (460 0050) at Riverside Race No. 1 (Not the Strawberry Pink car...if that's what that color above is) : (6th overall) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311045168.jpg |
I have the Strawbery Pink car (460 0111) being driven at Riverside Race No. 1 by David Pearson :

The cars stayed the same color but the drivers drew the cars out of a hat for each weekend to even out any possible performance differences between the identical cars. Some drivers had preferred cars that they thought had a better feel through the turns.
When the cars were crashed and repaired, I am sure no one would choose that one. I am not sure if the suspension settings were up to the driver? |
Here's one I assume is real from the gathering of Donohue cars at last year's Brian Redmund's vintage event at Road America.

When I was a kid tagging along with my parents to PCA track events, there was a guy from NJ who used to show up with a real IROC RSR. I watched it a bunch of times at Lime Rock, Pocono, and Watkins Glen in the late '70s or so. Even got a ride around the paddock once at Pocono. Pretty cool!

Drivers could only change seats. `everything else was under locak and key. `when a car was crashed - it was taken out of rotation. Basically the banners of the drivers name were taken off one and reapplied to another

Is that how you tell real RSR flairs from Turbo--by the "flattening off" of the curve at about 11.00 o'clock?

Sorry if it's a repost, but I found this great IROC footage a while back. You should spot this car somewhere in it

Great footage , thx for posting it arrowSC.
I'm sure the car is probably one of the 15 . But as to that history bio. on the car for the IROC series. Again , if the IROC car pictured in post 1 & 9 , is originally the strawberry pink IROC car (I cannot say 100% about the color - but that is the closest of the 15 colors that I can make it out as being) . More evidence that the shown driver history on that Bio. card for the IROC series is not accurate (unless it's actually a differant color. Or has been changed). As per footage , and the announcer : at 4:58 into video / "Bobby Allison in the Pink car is in 2nd place" at 5:10 / "and it's Richard Petty back there in the purple" (aubergine). I only point this out because it blows my mind. That I continually see owners (even long termers) of cars with serious race history. Yet they rarely have the history correct. I know it's not easy to accurately document race history. But if you are serious , and commited , it can be done. And as a caveat , regarding when a car is presented as being a certain car with a certain history. You cannot take it at face value no matter who owns it. Or is presenting . Only documentation tells the real story The announcer comment at 5:10 of the footage shoots a bullet through the possibility of the shown Race 2 history being accurate (Richard Petty), even taking into account a possiblilty of today identifying the current color shade wrong ...I mean misidentifying the current color as pink when actually it's red . Because unless the car's color was changed at some point in between the series and now. It is obviously not aubergine now. Of course , the announcer could have had it all wrong .... |
you have to remember too that there is a reason that Porsche only did one year. The drivers had no financial interest in the cars - so tended to run them flat out - and play bumper cars with them... It's tough to find an original IROC car without some substantial crash damage (and fix)
Most of the restorations that have been made over the years have been overdone. The factory built them as racecars - they were pretty crude - and pretty straight forward. |
I found on the Early 911S Registry that this car was originally Aubergine and repainted some time ago to the current color.
|
Pics on post 9 of the attached thread show the front trunk as still being aubergine.
Pittsburgh Grand Prix |
that would be aubergine, yes sir..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1313001653.jpg

It was originally the aburgine car. It was re painted in 1975 by Bob Nikel who purchased the car after the race series was over. Bob has owned the car since. It is one of the most original of the 15 iroc cars as it has not been restored. Just maintained since the series was over. The color it was painted was Peru red.
