Question 3.2L Euro pistons ??

Any advice on using these pistons in a 87 carrera rebuild? They are much cheaper than the 3.4L set and purport to have similar HP and quicker rev.

I would use 93octane on the street and mix with race gas for DE.

Any issues related to pinging, wear, or anything else?

- Chris

The high compression(10.3:1) pistons used on the ROW 3.2 Carreras along with the proper DME chip was the major source of increased power & torque for those cars.
  • 930/20 ROW 3.2 231 hp@5900 & 209 lbft@4800 10.3:1
  • 930/21 US 3.2 207 hp@5900 & 192 lbft@4800 9.5:1
  • 930/26 US 3.2 217 hp@5900 & 195 lbft@4800 9.5:1
The later 3.2 US were the same in all respects as the earlier 3.2 US, the hp inc was said to be from a change in measurement methodology(marketing?). The 98 mm 9.3:1 Motronic pistons with 23mm wrist pins for a 3.2/3.4 conversion would enhance the ROW #S and be easier to use with US pump gas. There are also 10.4:1 versions designed for carbs/MFI. These later will have the same problem that the ROW pistons have wrt pump gas. A friend of mine has a 930/20, he reports that it needs a minimum of 93 octane to run without pinging, in the summer(high temps will cause ping) he augments with race gas as often as possible.

Do you need different software to convert to EURO spec? What is the min octane rating for the EURO spec engine?

Yes, you will need to remap the DME, a new chip properly configured will do. The factory specified 98 octane euro style which correlates to 93-94 US style. Altitude, ambient temp, engine temp, humidity, etc all affect the octane requirments.
