Fuel leak from injectors on 3.2??

Has anyone had this issue? I have been trying track down the cause of the fuel smell from the engine bay of my Carrera and I initially thought it was the main fuel line but now it seems like it may be the injectors.

I have a new fuel filter, new press. reg. and rear fuel line and had Witch Hunter clean and service my injectors a few months ago. All has been fine untill a faint fuel smell when the car is cold and just sitting long after a ride. It has progressively gotton worse as of late and havent driven it while I am working on my A/C.

My heat is backdated so I can get my head and nose in pretty far and the smell seems strongest by the fuel rail and not on the front cloth peice of the main fuel line.

Has anyone had similar issues with injectors leaking at a cold stand still?? Could this be the line and I think its the injectors? Any way to tell or test exactly where its coming from? Any handheld gas sniffers out there??

(All searches also seem to deal with the rear or main fuel line and any injector issue search seems to direct me to non-motronic injector setups.)

Thanks.

Haven't seen this. If you're absolutely sure it's coming from a fuel rail on a particular side, then pull the rail and re-seat each injector and replace the rail. Won't take you long and you can inspect the o rings to see if they look okay.

A leaky injector would also probably give you some bad cold\warm start characteristics as well...

I'm surprised you'd have an injector leak, given you just had them serviced and should have installed new o-rings on both injector ends.

I'd not rule out your main fuel line if it's the old style with the swivel fittings. These scary lines can leak at the crimp collars AND at the swivels.

How about the short fuel line that connects the return line to the engine? That one is bent in a really tight radius and is notorious for cracking and leaking.

Thanks guys. I think I'll replace the 20yr old lines anyway and recheck the injectors. The car runes great with no issues so it must be the line. I found a dealer in CA that sells them for $330 or can have a SS one made for roughly the same.

Looking at the '87 date on the rubber doesn’t inspire confidence

It is possible for the injectors to leak between the plastic and steel parts of the body. This requires injector replacement.

I have fouind a small amount of accumilated soot or residue around the injectors. not sure if this is normal or not. All the fuel rail and connections are tight and secure. I'm going to pull them tomorrow.

Let us know what you find with this, as it sounds somewhat similar to an issue I noticed with my 3.2.

The 158 injectors are known to leak between the plastic and the metal body. I had a leak in one of mine (Cyl #1) had to get a new one when I had them serviced they found the issue.

Spoke to Witchhunter(they serviceed them a yr ago) and they confirmed what you guys are saying. I guess like anything on a 20yr old car with new gas fomula's, something has to go! I'm going to pull them and replace any that are at fault.

Very wise! fix the fuel leaks ASAP. If you EVER smell fuel DO NOT drive. Fuel smell means leak = fire!

My injector was leaking between the plastic and the metal body. I was not going to pay $40 so I cut the plastic at the end warmed up the plastic in a boiling water and with some twisting was able press the line back over the metal. However even better solution will be to get the thin fuel rated rubber hose and replace the plastic line with it.
