This must be one of the few areas where the weather is perfect today. Defiantly not too hot.

i drove my 1984 Carrera yesterday in Scottsdale AZ at 107 degrees, temp. went up to just above 3/4 after 20 minutes, watching it closely and not using my airco. Got worried when it got up just a little more and returned home. Not sure whats normal in those extreme hot climates, just did not want to risq any.

I always thought one of the benefits of air/oil cooled engines was their ability to operate more easily at temperature extremes, both hot and cold

High ambient temps WILL tes your cooling system. Keep an eye on the gauge. I run two coolers and a fan on my 3.6.
110F at freeway speeds and it was optimal.

If you anticipate stop and go and you don't have to drive, Don't.
If 110 and you can drive at speed, then go for it she will love it. Just watch the temps level make sure you stay below the hash mark right below RED, If you do go up there, no worries just change the oil, the viscosity will be comrpomised.

Ambient temp is typically 84 here nowadays in the city, with the engine temp hovering between 194 (bottom hash) and 210, with the occasional rise to 248 (esp with A/C on) upon extended idling. Hope this is not too uncommon given these conditions - did not seem to notice these high engine temps when I used Castrol GT-X 20w-50 before the valve adjust & oil replacement with VR1 Racing 20w-50. Hope difference in motor oil does not contribute to rise in engine temps..

Hey Bullet, what kind of oil filter are you using?

Not sure.. I know you were saying something about Napa Gold possibly causing your engine to overheat, so you switched back to Mahle. I didn't realize it'd be the difference-maker. Will check brand..

Yeap, I notice the higher temps and suspected the oil then when I changed to back to Mahle, temps went down.
Did you get your oil levels down to proper range, too much oil will cause our babies to get a bit higher.

Oil level is back down - I actually added 1/2 qt 2 days ago to get her back up to 30% on dipstick. Still noticed the slightly elevated 210 engine temp in today's 84 degree weather though (A/C on)..

If Oil filter is OK, I would switch back to Castrol to see if temps go down. You will at least eliminate the suspect oil issue for sure.
If I may suggest don't go back to that mechanic that over filled it.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but is there an obvious visual sign - besides checking the brand - that the oil filter is not doing its job, thereby causing poor oil circulation which leads to engine overheat ?
