Steve,
The difficulty with buying and selling an unknown used transmission is neither party has all the facts as to condition. The buyer is always going to assume the worst. Since the condition can vary from very valuable (say $1500) or worthless full of rust, the most satisfactory solution is to sell it disassembled, measured and photo documented. (It should be reassembled and lubed for shipping and not loosing parts.) Another possibility is to have a knowledgeable, independent 3rd party (shop) do the disassembly, measuring and documentation. The difficulty here is the cost can easily exceed the value. Too often, people lose the shim gaskets between the intermediate plate and main casting. Measuring these is critical to maintain the pinion depth setting. In general, the value is determined by condition, condition and condition. The only exception will be for closely matching the original transmission number and type to a car. Best, Grady

As Grady stated it is a hard thing and many ways to better determine a value. but as your post states condition unknown, or otherwise a core, if you watch the for sale forum such a trans ranges about $500 depending on how many are listed at the same time and how many people shopping.
If you are looking to get it out of the garage at a fair $ and make it go away, history has shown that is a reasonable starting price, take some pics including the bottom rib with the numbers on it and see what happens, You can also search the for sale forum (901) and you may find actual sales. If you have a car (or more) that use the 901 you may feel that the 400 or 500 price is not enough then you might as well keep it for spares, as I do along with a 901/914 The money for a undocumented trans is about what a couple good sets of gears or a main shaft would cost you. I have 3 cars using 901 / 911 transaxels so i keep spares. Sort of depends on how much are you willing to take to part with it vs need vs how much are you willing to spend to maybe get a better price. Regards Regards |
