What types of G50's?

This is to learn.

What types of G50 transmission are there?
What is the short nose/long nose difference?
Are there gearing differences?

Rough cost of a used one?

Rich

G50 is a class of trannies that replaced the 915 in (1988?)

they continued in use thru the 964 and 993

not sure re 996; I think P AG switched to the Japanese Aisen at some point in there (and I've worked hard to avoid learning much about the complicated modern cars like the SC...)

can you focus you question more?

They use Borg-Warner synchromesh, shift real good, take more torque and are heavy (compared to earlier designs).

In the 993 Porsche did a bunch of clever and expensive things to cut the weight some (like gun drilling at least one of the shafts).

What are you trying to pull off?

So there is one size, 5 speed G50?
88-98 is the same?

I am looking for the differences and types so that when I go shopping, I am educated.

G50s were introduced in 1987. There are a number of iterations. I believe the 964 'boxes are different from the 911s, but I don't know how, exactly. The 993 transmissions are longer than the 911s, though from what I understand are almost a direct bolt in on the 964 cars. From what I have been able to gather, there were three different factory G50s in the 1987-1989 cars: G50.00 (ROW), G50.01 (US, Canada and Japan) and G50.02 (Switzerland).

The 87 through 89 G50s have a blunt end and the mounting is on the bottom.

The later cars starting with the 964s had a mounting ear on the end and are even longer.

Thank you very much, the pics and all your knowledge answered my question.

So, what is the cost of a used 87-89 G50 on todays market?
I have no idea, have not seen more than one or two out there.

G 50 type 950/00 = Euro/RoW w/longer 4th & 5th ratios
G 50 type 950/01 = USA/Japan/M298 w/shorter 4th & 5th ratios
G 50 type 950/02 = Switz w/altered longer ratios (I believe this was done for quieter running).
G 50/03 = C2 Worldwide ratios
G 50/04 = C2 Switz only
*All above are 5-speed w/ 9:31 final drive

G 50/21 = 993 6-speed
G 50/50 = Turbo 5-speed used from 1989-1994

G 64 = C4 5-speed w/integrated transfer case
