I am still trying to fix various oil leaks on my 915 tranny.
One suspect is one of the differential seals where the axle is going out. The question is, can it be renewed w/o taking the engine/tranny out of the car? It looks like just unbolting the axle from the tranny, unbolting the drive shaft and pull it out. Put in a new seal and mount everything back. Can it be done like that? Any difficulties expected? Thanks, Jens '76 2.7 CIS with '73 body conversion |

Jens, just finished this. Pretty easy after I corrected my mistakes. Need to get ready for work. I'll give you the details after I get settled in at work.

Grew up in Portland, Oregon. Love the mountains and flyfishing. Gave up the money. And moved. No regrets. Was in Portland last weekend for the Zupan's Historic Races. TOO CROWDED .... We don't have a stoplight in Stevensville, YET. Lot's of places to drive and no traffic. TTYL ------------------ Cary Kutter 77 Euro Carrera w/3.2 PCA Region - Big Sky |

First thing. Don't buy anything but a Porsche seal. Tried a seal from local parts house. NO GO. Inside not quite the same.
IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE. DON'T REUSE THEM. BTDT. With the car level, the oil is right at the bottom of the seals. Mine was always drained, but you might try doing it without draining it. TIME & $$$ saver. Next, take off the axle shafts. Be sure the HEX drive is TOTALLY seated in the bolts. I'd order 6 bolts. Because you'll want to change out some. BTDT. Work your way around. MAKE SURE YOUR HEX DRIVE or ALLEN WRENCH is in GREAT condition. If not, you'll DORK up some. Find the CV gasket. Might be on the flange. Might be on the CV joint. Determine wither you want to replace. When in doubt, DO. Pull out 2 of the CV bolts. You'll need them to take off the flanges. Now to keep from getting that black CV Goo in your hair. Put a plastic bag over the ends of the CV joints. Next, tie them back to the trailing arms. I bought a couple big thick 1 1/2 ft. cable ties. Worked great. Now, time to take off the flanges. Pick one. Right side is easier. Small heat exchanger. Put the 2 bolts in the flange. One empty spot in between. Make sure that your in far enough. You can see the threads out the back of the flange. But not too far. Use your fingers. Now you need a BIG ASS screw driver and a 19mm socket. Use the screwdriver to hold flange in place. Back it off. Only 32 LBs so not too bad. Pull it out. Should have a goofy looking bolt and a thick copper/brass ?? washer. Pop the seal out with seal puller. Don't knick the case rim. Pretty easy. Now inspect the flange shaft. Clean up any corosion with a little emory cloth. Now put in the new seal. Flush with case is correct. Here is where I went sideways. DON'T GO THERE. BTDT. I put it all the way in the first time, thinking it would be better. I put mine in about another 2 mm below flush, to give the shaft a new home to ride the seal on. Worked for me. Assemble in reverse order. Get the correct torque specs. My 915/61. Mine was 32 on one and 30 on the other. Can't remember which was which here at work. Makes a big difference on the CV bolts. Wither you have 6 bolts or 4 bolts. Hope This Helps. Good Luck. You buy the tickets. I'll fly over and do them for you. ![]() ------------------ Cary Kutter 77 Euro Carrera w/3.2 PCA Region - Big Sky [This message has been edited by cary (edited 07-17-2001).] |

Thats sounding manageable.
Thanks again, esp. the hint with the CV joint gasket. That the things you usually have not handy... One thing I am missing: Don't you have to unscrew the bolt inside the flange before you can pull the flange out? Jens |

That's this part.
Now you need a BIG ASS screw driver and a 19mm socket. Use the screwdriver to hold flange ( STUCK BETWEEN THE 2 CV BOLTS ) in place. Back it off. Only 32 LBs so not too bad. Pull it out. Should have a goofy looking bolt and a thick copper/brass ?? washer. 19mm bolt in the center of the flange and the black GOO. Easier to do than explain. Becareful on the CV bolts. Even the brand new Porsche ones, seem soft. Replaced my hex drive about 1/2 thru the project. Don't leave buggered up ones in there. You'll kick yourself next time. My 2c. ![]() Thanks for the tip on the speedo tech article. ------------------ Cary Kutter 77 Euro Carrera w/3.2 PCA Region - Big Sky [This message has been edited by cary (edited 07-18-2001).] |
