Symptoms of bent or broken rear shock piston rod?
I had my car in for an alignment after getting new tires and lowering the front. I asked them to investigate a clunk from the rear and they said it was from the shocks, that the piston was bumping against the tube. I'm trying to understand the mechanics of what's happening here, because I can't feel anything different in the way the car rebounds from bumps, or the way it handles a corner, whether on the street or track. What I'm thinking is that the piston rod was bent, but not broken, so the clunk is the pairing hitting the inner tube, but still traveling up and down properly.
A but of background, I replaced the shocks 3 or 4 years ago, but didn't have the bushings in right, so there was no busboy between the shock and the shock mount for quite a while. I fixed this once discovered, but I could see that metal on metal contact bending the piston rod. They're bilstein sports. |

I think if the piston rod was bent it would impede on the up and down movement of the shock but it wouldn't make a knocking sound ...
Those shock pistons are a tight fit in the cartridge and i doubt very much that the piston would be knocking inside the tube ! Best bet would be to remove the rear shocks and have a look ! Cheers ! Phil

I did - they look perfectly normal. No fluid dripping (though bilsteins are gas, not oil).

I know they're gas ... i have them on my car as well ... lol
Just a shot in the dark here ,but did you have a look at the sway bar mounts lately,not just the droplinks but where they are welded to the body ? Just seems that there are a lot of posts about broken mounts lately ! Cheers ! Phil

The 70 and 71 crossmember means that Aluminum arms won't fit without modification and even then the dust cover hits the side of the damper tube on larger suspension displacements. It can also hit heat exchanger boxes.
