Any one backdated mirrors ?

I'm in the middle on my 3.0 RS conversion. I'm taking off the SC mirrors and going back to 74-75 flag style. Has anyone done this ?

Hello

You must fill the holes and then drill the ones for the old version. The inner doorskin has two little recesses where the holes for the mirror have to be.

If you are not good inn welding then remove the mirror base support reinforcments ( In 78 they maybe are still rivetet in ) and rplace them with prerolled sheetmetal tag weld them on the hole openenings drain them with good rust prohetive and fill the restholes with bondo. ( thick bondo will slack in over the months

Mr. Absolute Beginner

I was hopeing you'd see this. How are you doing ? Didn't want to bug you with an e-mail.

Yes, the 77 still has the riveted reinforcement plate.

After pondering yesterday with the new mirrors in my hand.
I'm going to use the 2 bottom holes ( SC style mirrors ) as the reference from front to back.
Then I'll have the local ( portable ) welder come out and weld in the fillers lower than the door skin. Then I'll use the new metal "bondo " stuff. Can't remember the name. ( catalyst )
I'm going to use it to fill the holes from the Rocker Panel covers also.

With the new RS/IROC bumpers and the 76 a/c Turbo Tail I found.
Decided to paint the entire car. Have a couple spots the last guy did poorly. Bad Prep.

Something else you could help me with. Where to stop the paint and where to start the undercoat ? On the rocker panels. Going RS look with no deco covers. Thought you might have a measurement I could use. ???

As always, Thanks............. Here's where I'm going. Wheels are done and they are beautiful. Went with Royal Blue. The flag mirrors are going to be painted to match the body. After they're bead blasted. ( Personal Preference )

Hello

Can´t understand your Mirror issue.

If you drill the holes trough the inner door sheet you will always land symetrical. Check and messuring before isn´t a misstake.
Also there is a template in one workshopmanual.

Factory SCRS had neither ( Just thin paint and slight seam sealing and no rocker panels even no cap on the torsion bar hole )

How I´m doing.

Well have a part time job since Januar but somehow can´t refill the battery.
This plus doing some homework for my mother who lives 30 mls away ( And my 486 DX laptop loads slow like a snail ) keeps me away from the boards and even my mailboxes. OK It saves me money on the long run too.

You know; Why is on the end from the money so much days over ?

Maybe I sould hire for a new job in New York

Finally I can write some jokes for him and screw up his cars too 8)

The issue on the mirrors...........Because the mirrors aren't mounted exactly in the same spot ( front to back )on both doors.
The left one is farther forward than the right one.

Is there a template for the 74-75 mirrors ? To determine the location of the 2 small holes needed for the 74-75 mirrors. After I weld in the SC holes and refinish the body work.
Looking for both, how far down from the window trim and where in relation to the front door edge ?

The only template I found in the 72-83 manuals was for adding the right side SC mirror. With all those BIGG holes.

But its not rocket science. And I have a thing for being level.
So if there isn't any easy info on the location of the two holes, I'll get it.

Maybe someone with a 74-75 will chime in with a measurement down from the window trim ? Which would give me good start. And shot me a JPEG so I can see it in relation to the window trim ?

As for Jerry in NYC ............ I would think he would be honored to have you on his staff. Wither thats on the auto staff or joke writting staff ?????

Take Care

Hello

No the template is for the 1965 on mirrors. The mounting position didn´t changed untill the electrics came ( And even those had different positions for RHD )

Finding the old position is very easy as they are marked on the inner door structureframe with two small centerpunch dots and drill them up to the same size ( 18,5 mm ? ) like the ones who make acces to the door frame screws ( use the same rubberplug too ).
Then from there ( The inside yet the area is inside the area along the upper edge from the door where the cable holes come out, yes the front edge up and then something back ) you go on by drilling two small 6 mm bolt holes something upwards as the skin is rounded ( So you can place the nuts )

On the mirrorbase you will find the bolts can be slided in a rail so the distance between the holes isn´t that important.

Start drilling one hole then bolt the mirror down with that one ( Use a fille to make a longhole for the correct position to place the 6mm nut and still enough space to set the tool on it,

Then sit in and check the position and adjust the base perfect to your needs, Then use a pen and mark the baseposition ( go just around it. Remove mirror and use a lineal to prolong the line trough the middle from the other hole and then drill that too.

That is so easy to do that writing about it takes longer then doing it .

Grüsse.

Haven't pulled the door panels yet. I'll probably see the light when I do.
Went back thru Volume II again. I still didn't find the 65 template. But mine are shiny new and perhaps missing the needed supplemnet.
But with the instructions you've given me, I have it handled.

Lightbulb Roland, I've seen the LIGHT

I'm a little slow, but they keep paying me.

Here's the spot to drill the holes to back date the mirrors.

Pretty easy. Moved the right mirror forward using the measurements from the left side.

Here you go.........

I assume this is the same for the little Durant mirrors, as used in everywhere but the USA up to '75?????

Thanks Roland and Cary - cool stuff
