Bumper Heating Up

I have an 87 911 and after the oil burned off from the car sitting all winter, I noticed the bumper was extremely hot... and ideas could be causing this to happen?

Welcome!
Is your muffler/exhaust system stock? because it's pretty much right behind the bumper - were you letting it idle in place or driving her around?

Show us a pic of your car when you get a chance.

Welcome aboard!

+1 Bumper hot when car hot, normal.

Put your hand near the driver rear wheel, even hotter with the cat.

I hate to be the guy who says "do a search", but there are a few good threads already on how to insulate the rear bumper (typically to protect paint).

Thanks for the feedback... I did do a search on "over heat, hot bumper... and several others and did not find anything. Bottom line is, just don't touch it. If it hasn't effected the paint

You have to remember that the bumper is thick aluminum. It soaks up heat easily and fast.

I've seen where an improperly installed rear valance (or aftermarket exhaust) will cause the muffler to come in contact with the rear valance (thanks for screwing up my car "Doc"). There should be a small air gap. Without air flowing around the muffler the heat builds up and you can damage the paint.

Do you have the shield in place between your exhaust and your bumper? It's part number 930 505 511 00 "Heat Protection" in the catalog. I am sure some heat will still get transferred, but if you are missing the shield it might be hotter than others are experiencing. I don't recall my rear bumper being an issue, I will check next time the car is out.

You can have the CAT and muffler ceramic coated to reduce heat by 20%.

Have you considered a little ventilation?

Oh,right, get all holier than thou.

Seriously, I did the holes because my car was getting hotter than I liked while waiting in line for auto-x runs. I have a small battery and don't trust it to start the car multiple times (we get 12 runs and with unloading off the trailer, tech, etc., that's maybe 20 starts and very little re-charging). Any way, it seems to help.

And, more to the point, the bumper is cooler (okay, it is fiberglass) and I have had no paint damage around the pipes.

Just a couple of 4" holes behind the license plate might help if you want to stay stockish.

I went to TRE for the installation of my fiberglass bumper. So, yes, they put some insulation on as per the referenced thread. No issues to date.

Thanks, Dave.
