"Spider crack" paint repair on a SC for sale

Hi guys. I'm looking at a black sc with the above anomaly on a rear panel. Owner says repair looks beautiful. I'm wondering if this crack denotes a bigger problem. Rest of the car looks fantastic. Plan to get Ppi if I get that far. Thx if u can recommend/suggest anything. Regards,

K

I have that on the LR 1/4 - one guy said it was improperly prepped re-spray and the clear coat was cracking/shrinking. He wasn't a pro, but the re-spray story made sense since it was just in one area - but I never took it to a pro - not much I was prepared to do about it anyway.

you could deduct of course after the ppi - good luck.

Body fill? Try running a magnet along the area and see if it sticks....

Hmm. I would want to know what's under the crack.

And while you're at it check the rest of the car for rust. Focus on the front suspension area... Especially under the battery!

To me it's a big deal. Shoddy repairs are a big no no in my book. I wouldn't touch it. >>> There are so many good cars for sale right now.

WHY??? How much longer does it take to do any repair job properly?

Thanks Dan, Reifle, and sc. It must be a respray since the front looks nearly devoid of rock chips! I'll press the seller more on this. I tried to have him let me contact the previous owner, but he's hesitant on this. Dang, I thought I had found the right one!

If you can take the car to a paint shop, they could tell you in an instant what they did.

Good point, Bob. I may do this if seller is adamant that no respray was done. Perhaps this is why he's had thw car for sale over a year.. thx again

I got the same story from the PO - he didn't know the history and claimed ignorance. I was bummed because everything else was stellar. I had it detailed and they faulted the clear coat application, said it could have been too much sun, yada yada.

It would cost me too much at this point in the grand scheme of the other mech maintenance I am doing, and I figured if I spent the moolah now, I would be over protective of the paint investment - so the detailer compounded it and it looks great for now.

I have some road rash in the front (that I did), so this helps me rationalize to myself the paint can wait. The body was checked and is rust free, so essentially it is a slight cosmetic disappointment, but she's a pretty little 10 footer to me.

hope this helps somewhat.

The hood on my Jeep looks like that. It is black, 12 years old and original paint. In my case, I believe it's a product of being black on a big flat area that gets the brunt of the sun and heat from the engine. Your example may not be poor application of paint, but I suggest that you seek a professional opinion for clarification. Keep in mind that if it isn't fixed it will probably bug you all to hell...

If it's not into the paint you could always have the clear coat wet sanded and sprayed, then a good shop can buff/blend it so you'd never see it.

I'm with timmy on this cosmetic issue. If the rest of the car is in great condition and it passes a PPI to your satisfaction in relation to the price, then factor the blemish into the price point and make an offer. If the price already takes the cosmitic issue into consideration, and you are happy with the rest of what you see, there should be no issue, right?

Thank u, Dan! I appreciate your input here

Hi Kevin. The seller says the spider cracks are forward of the rear tire. Maybe it is weathering, but I'm going to have a pro check it. Thanks, btw!

Timmy- great idea...i think this is what the seller has done. Thank u...

Syz- i agree with u! If the car hasnt had a significant respray I will consider buying it. Thx for your input!
