Looking for Body & Upholstery shops in DFW area

I'm going to have my '84 Targa painted this fall/winter. Anyone have any experience with a good shop in the Dallas area? Nothing in body work is really needed, other than a couple of minor dings, so I'm really focused on the quality of their paint work.

I'm also interested in an upholstery shop that is good.

Thanks!

Ed,

Used to live in the DFW area and had some paint and body work done while there. Have PM'ed you the name of a shop to stay away from but would strongly suggest getting together with the local PCA group and asking them who they recommend. Have heard that GT Auto is good and after seeing their work it did look nice. There are several good shops there but word of mouth will give you a better idea of who to look at for paint.

My car was sideswiped on LBJ by a semi and the body shop said "in and out in a month." 5.5 months later I had the car back and only after threatening to come back with the police and a tow truck. The quality is fair but was not worth the hassle, so now you realize why I say that word of mouth means a lot in this area.

Best paint shop in D/FW, GTI Dan Butts is the owner. 817-540-0712 Tell him you got his name from me. He is costly but only uses the best German paints. His place has only the coolest cars in for repair and paint. Call me and you can come by and see his work. 817-563-2562

Bump.

I have a friend moving to Dallas, and he needs some shop recommendations for his '75 911S.

1. Paint & Body work
2. Interior (carpet and upholstery)
3. General Mechanical

Thanks,

Thanks,
Depends on how much he wants to spend, but here is where I would take my car

1. Stuart's Paint & Body
2. The Inside Job (See Johnny)
3. Mayo's or Zims

Ed,

Wow, a chance to see Ruby in the flesh.
Let us know when she's in town so we can see her first hand, before AND after she goes under the knife!

dtxscott

Drop me a PM if you ever want to compare '89 GP White Targas, I'm in North D.

Joeaksa

Would be handy info if'n you don't mind dropping me a PM about that shop as well.

Thanks.

Wow, this one got resurrected from the dead last Dec.

I ended up using Jack's Auto Body in Carrollton. They were somewhat prominent in the custom world. They also hung a new rear end on my Infiniti when I got rear ended by some loon asleep at the wheel. 9 years later, and she still looks great-no paint failures other than normal track/road rash. And she isn't getting much detailing other than wax every one or two years, and being kept pretty clean.

To respond to Scott's comments above:

Stuarts was not only ridiculously priced with a silly lead-time, I know of at least one high paying customer of theirs who got stiffed bigtime by them. I say screw Stuarts.

I've yet to hear of any paint/body work done by Mayos or Zims? I would think they'd farm anything out?

At any rate, I'd try Jacks again, but I'm not sure how they are in 2011.

I had some work done on my 993 and had good luck with Stuarts. This was well before the incident you cite. I'm aware of that situation and would advise to proceed with caution.

The Zims/Mayo reference was his point #3 regarding general mechanical. They don't do body work.

I have a close friend near Amarillo who does my body work when I can afford to leave the car for an extended period. He knows 911s very well.

Ed, thanks for the update, I'll give those guys a call. I used Stuarts several years ago when someone backed into my front when stopped at a light. Definitely pricey! The cars in the shop when I was there were off the hook, 3-4 Ferraris, an old Lambo, several 911s, etc. It turned out very well but they could have changed. Years before I used Details Ltd in Addison with some SERIOUS damage to my old 535i which also turned out stunning.
My seat repair is very minimal, it's just a rip in the seam on the driver's side bolster but I've been staring at it every time I open the door and I'm sick of it so I want to fix it.
