Help again!!! Strut problem #2
I just installed my Koni adjustables in the front struts of my car. But, now, I'm getting a knocking noise from both sides in the front. Closer inspection reveals that the top part of the strut (beneath the dust cover) is just wobbling back and forth a bit on both sides. Did I forget to do something? The smaller diameter of the Koni inserts appear to be just banging a little on the sides of the original Boge strut housings. What gives????

ok... after walking away for a while to chill out and looking at it again, it looks as if the cap nut on the strut housing for the boges is maybe too large for the koni insert. i have a new nut that came with the koni's, but it has threads to screw on the inside of a strut mount. the original has threads that screw on top of the lower strut assembly. do i need to buy a different type of cap nut?

Adam,
It sounds like your supplier sent the wrong Koni inserts ... Check back and see if they can confirm that the insert and cap nuts are both different for Boge struts vs Koni struts.

yes, you have to order the inserts to fit an internal or external threaded strut. it's not the cap.

thanks warren and john.
this is bummer news, though... i bought these used not knowing about the different threaded insert options. ![]() edit: bruce anderson mentions the need for some type of 'adapter' when using the koni inserts with boge gas strut assemblies. i also just found a tech article on paragon's website that talks about the need for a special washer with the inserts when used with carrera's in order to accomodate the original cap. paragon's tech article states: "84-89 cars utilize a female threaded gland nut.* When using this type of nut, Koni has supplied a special washer that sits on top of the insert prior to installing the gland nut. This washer centers the insert in the strut housing, a job that had been performed by the male type gland nut." what do you guys think? Last edited by adamnitti; 03-10-2002 at 03:18 PM.. |

i never posted my results, so i thought i'd pass this along.
the strut inserts i had came with hardware to fit a male threaded gland nut. to get these to fit my car and use the female threaded gland nut already on my car, i simply needed to just get the 2 centering washers that i mentioned in my last post. whenever you order the koni inserts for a carrera 3.2, my understanding is that they come with these already (mine were slightly used, so i didn't have them included). anyways, i put the centering washers on top of the strut inserts, and voila! no more shakes and rattles, and everything fit nice and solid. throwing the car around on an autocross course this past weekend confirmed everything was nice and tight. hope this helps someone else who may have been as confused as i was.
