To sell and move on or not..

Basically last summer/ Fall I bought a 1988 Guards Red porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet. 33,000 Miles and Pretty mint car other than being an 88. Since getting it I have replaced the top and motors, upgraded the turbo to a K27, added Rarlyl8 headers, Stebro Exhaust Tial 1 bar waste gate spring with a straight pipe and a Fabspeed Intercooler. I have also replaced some leaky valve head covers and put a new ignition system into the car. Last year as soon as I got the car I got it lowered did some minor repairs and put some very wide and fat Fiske Rims with michelin pilot sport tires on it. The thing is completely bad ass and fast.

So why right now am I having the urge to sell it? There is no possible way I will recover the money I have put into this car but lately I have been thinking about something....newer. Partially admittedly as my wife is not into Heritage cars so I rarely get to drive it and secondly I have found myself liking some of the other body style Still 911, still Turbo, still convertible. Is there anything that I would enjoy as much of more that than this, or am I just having a temporary brain fart and should jut go drive my carhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1312385192.jpg

Great car

This car is great and looks good too. I have a 1986 930 coupe, your looks much nicer.

Some people will tell you that a 33k 930 is boss and it's a cab and so rare. But you have modified the car to your liking, there is nothing wrong with that but the car value is the most stock. So if left stock, it would be worth more and you maybe would not be upside down. But you did what you wanted.

I understand your wife's concerns. Look at the last great air cooled Turbos, maybe not much different. Also it would be vey cool to get the best twin Turbo like the 2005 model, something about this time frame. I think some late model turbo models are holding firm. But very salty.

Bring it over to my place. I'll drive it for you for a couple of months and let you know what I think.

I would move slowly here and not make a rash decision. It's a beautiful car and now seems well sorted to your liking. For some this is typical. It was always about the acquisition, then the creation but once that is complete you're ready to move on to the next "one".

However if you're are over her then you might as well move. I get what you're saying about "Heritage" cars. Old cars are just that....old. A newer Turbo/anything will be much more wife/user friendly.

Good luck.......she really is a beauty and I bet a hoot to drive

you have a very very very short wife.

Firstly, great car and nice mods!

Secondly, go and drive a few 'newer' cars before even thinking of selling. I have old and new Porsches and for me, I get more enjoyment from my old 911! It's not about the look or the prestige, it's about "the way a car makes YOU feel" and you won't know until you drive others.

Don't make any rash decisions or even contemplate selling, it not a good head space to be (not to mention your 930 is going up in value right now as the newer ones depreciate, rapidly LOL)

Just my 2c , good luck with you decision!

Cheers

You are not alone

I start thinking about 'upgrading' or selling my car whenever it sits in the garage for too long. These thought seem to fade away whenever I do drive it more often.

33k is super low mileage! Maybe you should drive it more? My car has 105k of which I put on about 50k during the past 13 years. So far this car has been my one and only Porsche.

+1

Snap out of it !

I have had the same thought, 996, for many times and still have not done it yet. Of course, I like to have both, but that is not going to happen. Take it slow, then you might change your mind.
BTW, very good looking car

If you don't care for the car anymore, sell it. What do you (and apparently your wife) want out of a car? Unless you're willing to simply hang on to it for the next 10-20 years for investment's sake, why not get something you like?

DanielDudley 08-03-2011 01:14 PM

I think you are a 993 kind of guy.

Plecostomus 08-03-2011 01:22 PM

Go buy a convertible Bugatti and youll never have this dilemma again

rudyistaken 08-03-2011 07:18 PM

Just to contemplate this more....what s my car worth? Whats a 996 worth?

Kidasters 08-03-2011 07:51 PM

Your car - my guess is that it's worth about 20K as is. Maybe 25. It's a classic. LOW LOW miles. You've made some nice upgrades. It's an air-cooled.

Lets look at a water cooled 996 C4 in the undesirable 1999 year. I went to Kelly Blue Book (New Cars, Used Cars, Blue Book Values & Car Prices - Kelley Blue Book).

Even in excellent condition - 15K. Now - I know bull. No-one would sell one for that.

But - I bet you could get a 99 C4 for 20. The water cooled cars aren't as sought after as the air cooled cars. I have a buddy with a 96 993 C4 he bought in 2004 for 36. He could sell that car today for.....36. Yep - the car has depreciated zero in 7 years. It's a great car too (speed yellow/black).

Your car - I'd keep it. I still regret selling my 964. I loved it. The current one - nope, gonna keep it for awhile.

IMHO - your car has a ton more personality than a 996, 997 or 998. Keep it.

Ken

Buying a car is almost always a money loser. There are no guarantees that you won't find yourself needing to repair a 996. You have spent money on the 930 to make it fit your own taste. You will probably want to do the same on the next vehicle. That said, if you aren't driving it because of the wife then the answer is clear. First, be sure that she won't do the same thing with the next car. She may just not like riding around in a sports car. Once you are sure that isn't the problem, find out what she finds objectionable (she may not like a loud car or maybe she hates having the wind blow her hair...) and then take your lumps and find something she will ride in so you can enjoy it together. Be sure to include her in the decision process so you won't make the same mistake twice. My wife didn't want me to buy a red car so I gave up my first color preference so that she would be happier when she rides with me.

Matt Monson 08-04-2011 08:16 AM

I personally wouldn't sell that car. But if you really want out of it, you can probably find someone with a nice 996 Cab. that will trade you straight across for it. But you're dreaming if you think you can get 996 turbo money for your car. And 964 and 993 turbos are MORE, not less, expensive than 996 turbos. But the thing to consider is that an NA 996 makes similar power to your turbo car, so it's not really much of a "downgrade" to consider going to a regular 996.

rsNINESOOPER 08-04-2011 10:18 AM

Does your wife not get to go shoe shopping because you aren't interested in it?

Didn't think so. If driving this car makes you happy and it doesn't hurt anyone then just set the time to do it. Commute in it occasionally, drive it because you feel like it etc. These cars are useless unless driven and enjoyed. I'm lucky to have a wife who supports my obsessions whether it be cars or design. Others have given good perspective on what replacing it with a different model would mean financially. If YOU truly desire or prefer another model then by all means sell or trade to get yourself into what you want- the differences between air-cooled and water cooled are many. Try driving a newer car such as a 997 and see what you prefer before you go over the falls.

Life is too short to not enjoy the ride so to speak.

Esel Mann 08-04-2011 10:36 AM

While a nice ride, at the end of the day you have a ride which (a) is tailored to your likes, (b) has mods for which one cannot reasonable expect to get what was put into it.

I gather the true underlying dilemma you face is the fact that if you do try to sell it and are able to actually sell it (a) you will take it on the chin as far as $$$ put into it for the mods, and (b) you will take it on the chin a second time if you are unable to locate a buyer who is looking for the ride set up as you have set it up.

Life is short, price it to sell (no I do not want your ride), move on to your next ride, and learn from this current ride!
