Sc Ac
The weather is getting warm so I'm thinking about AC for my 83 SC. When I bought the car nothing was said about AC, but when I looked at it, the belt was off the compressor and the PO said well, it was cycling on and off all the time so he disconnected it. Hmmm. Np, I've ordered a belt with the intent of charging and running it, but noticed last nite the hoses on the compressor weren't tight (could move nuts with fingers...easily). Hmmm. I turned the fan and temp control on and off and without a belt the darn compressor did nothing...no clutch clicks, nothing.
Question, is there a way to test the compressor/clutch to see if anything is going on in it's mechanical heart, or should I just junk it, buy a new one, new receiver/dryer and upgrade to R134? Appreciate any advice...would like some AC before OK turns ugly. thks

If you want it to work, and work well, then you probabaly need to get rid of the York compressor. OE hoses are porous so they lose refrigerant. For this reason, many folks replace the hoses. You will almost surely need a new dryer. Spendy, but this is the cost of an AC system that actually works.
But first, it would be a good idea to see if the sytem will even come on. That is, does your electrical system work properly? If the clutch solenoid is not getting voltage, then a new compressor will NOT WORK just like the old one does NOT WORK.

AC on any car that doesn't work and hasn't for a while can turn into big money repairs.
The compressor won't click because there is no pressure in the system. If the pipes are loose then there's a good possiblity the car had a problem and the previous owner didn't want to deal with it. I would take the car to a good AC shop and let them prussure up the system and check for leaks. Check the compressor will turn by hand and look at all the pipes and connections, if two are loose others may be as well. Make sure the front condenser fan works and put an inline fuse in the wire if it hasn't got on...the fan can burn out and set the car alight!!!! (really, this does happen) Don't forget, this is a near 20 year old car, so even if they get the system to work, other parts in the ac may fail so don't expect a guarantee on the repairs...........

I'd recommend taking your 83SC to a shop that does Porsches.
I had lots of trouble with my 83SC A/C. I ended up converting to a rotary comopressor and I stayed with R-12.In our cars the R-12 will give you the best results. |
