URGENT - Gearbox Guru's - Help Needed Please
I have a 76 RoW Carrera 3.0 that started life as a sporto. At some stage this was replaced with a74 915 with 7:31 R&P. If the car started lifed as a manual it would have had a 8:31.
I have always had a small fifth gear wine and a graunch into second gear on fast shifts. Recently I have installed a wevo shifter, coupler and new rubber box mounts, the 5th gear wine is now totally unbearable. I have just have the box apart due to leaks. On the first decent drive after the box out, the input shaft seal moved and box oil has spued everywhere. I am told that these boxes have a narrow band for the seal seat and this is common. So what do I do, is it as easy as replacing 2nd and 5th gears to cure the wine or do I need to replace the whole box. Some say a fifth gear wine can't be cured because it's the direct drive. The fifth gear ratio is currently 0.72 which I understand is the highest you can get. My goal is to delete the 5th gear wine. How do I best fix this? the gear faces may be galled from lack of oil in it's past history. need to replace the pair if so. might want to check the R&P also. the faster you go, the more they whine if they are worn or not set up right. might be good to find a later trans and use that 0.72 5th in it.
